In this Shop Talk, Manufacturing Engineer Tim shares two important design rules to follow when creating elements that will be perforated on a punch machine.

• Hole Size Rule: A hole should never be smaller than the material thickness. Smaller holes increase the risk of tool damage and poor part quality.

• Webbing Rule: The space between holes should also be no smaller than the material thickness. Proper spacing helps prevent twisting, warping, and distortion during the punching process.

Small design decisions early in the process can make a big impact on fabrication efficiency, project timelines, and overall cost.

StellarCraft fabricated custom Altair Perforated Panels featuring a windmill-inspired pattern for the Killeen Fire Station in Killeen, Texas. The panels incorporated precision-cut letters and numbers with LED backlighting, creating a striking halo effect around the cutout areas.

One of the most common installation issues we hear when specifying a guardrail comes down to the connection points. 🛠️

There are two primary ways guardrail systems are assembled:
• Fastened connections 🔩
• Welded connections 🔥

Over time, fastened systems can become more vulnerable due to loosening from wind and structural loads, galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, and potential tampering or vandalism.

Welded connections permanently fuse similar metals together, helping reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion while creating a stronger, more secure, tamper-resistant connection.

Originally completed in 1889, the University of Minnesota’s Pillsbury Hall recently underwent a renovation to transform the historic landmark into a modern home for the English Department and Liberal Arts Engagement Hub.

StellarCraft fabricated the custom stainless steel staircase railings within the building's iconic turret. More than 300 pickets were individually fabricated and measured to meet the changing slope of the four-story staircase. On the exterior, StellarCraft fabricated multiple building entrance handrails. These decorative handrails were finished to recreate the appearance of naturally weathered bronze.
