Our volunteer team began arriving down here in NC on Friday and were all on the ground working by Saturday morning. Nine of us went down hauling equipment and tools to aid these folks outside of Boone. We got started working on a handful of roadway and access projects, while 2 of us spent part of the afternoon traversing the area looking to get plugged in to be best utilized.

Different and devastating, would both be words I would use to define situation down here. This is nothing like past disaster events we have traveled to. Due to the mountain terrain, the floods and related weather was fast moving. Water didn't stick around, and rain fall developed literal flash floods that left major damage in "veins" near natural waterways and drainage ways. While the heavy winds did cause widespread tree blowdowns, those are heavy in pockets, not like a tornado that wipes out a mile or more pathway. The areas of water damage are extremely narrow and concentrated in nature(maybe a few hundred yards wide in many cases) but there is damage in every hollow and valley across the western part of NC and into eastern TN that was under the direct path of Helene, and everything downstream got exponentially slammed. Essentially, where damage occurred, it was major. Mucking out silt from yards and houses, repairing roads and driveways where they are completely missing, and repairing drainage ways are what we are focusing on currently.

The local folks out here are proud to band together and help each other. Unlike other events we have witnessed, beside the obvious major damage along the roads, these people had a lot of the local roadways cleared when we got here. Every farmer and good'olboy has a tractor with a front end loader or a chainsaw down this way. This work is not foreign to them, rather just part of life in many ways. That is not to downplay what needs to be done. There is a ton of work here to get these people back on their feet. They are hard working and arent just sitting around waiting for handouts. People who have lost their homes are serving dinners at the church here and are doing so happily! These are the type of folks who deserve our help.

For those who can not volunteer, I would encourage anyone who has the means, to drop off donations TODAY to Grace Community Church in Cranberry Township. Check out their page, for details. We will be meeting the trucks with collections down here to see that the material gets to the right locations.

If you pray, please pray for the local people and their long push to get back to a sense of normal, our team members to be best utilized during their time away, logistics, equipment and vehicles to run as intended(you don't realize how difficult it is to find a drive tire for a triaxle on a Saturday afternoon, without cell reception, and after most of the roads to the main towns are washed out).

We are presently compiling information and coordinating donation and volunteer efforts to support disaster relief operations in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Our partnership with Grace Community Church, Cranberry Township, PGT Trucking, Freeport Transport Inc, JADCO, PMF Rentals, HP Starr Lumber, Cleveland Brothers, and General Rental Center, among others, will enable us to collect and transport essential donations to affected areas.

A handful of our employees and family will be leaving later this week to get on the ground and help.

The following items are being collected: Contractor-size trash bags, blankets, first aid supplies, feminine hygiene products, diapers, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, cleaning supplies, shovels, brooms, gloves, coolers, flashlights, batteries, fans, dehumidifiers and generators.

Please note we are NOT accepting bottled water, food, or clothing.

All donations should be new and unopened packages.
