Energy saving tips during cooling months:
• Change air filters monthly. Dirty filters increase energy consumption by causing your air conditioner to run longer to cool your home making mechanical failures more likely due to the added strain on the system.
• Run clothes dryers at the coolest time of the day. Dryers require makeup air as air flows through the dryer and out the vent. This makeup air is being pulled into your home from outdoors and may be very hot and humid thus requiring cooling of that air. Bathroom and kitchen ventilation also has the same effect if left on for extended periods of time when not needed.
• Be sure the condenser coil on your outdoor unit is cleaned annually. Poor airflow across the coil slows down heat transfer and causes poor system efficiency which elevates utility cost. Annual maintenance is recommended to maximize energy efficiency, reduce part failure and extend equipment life.
• Something as simple as closing the blinds or drapes on your windows can reduce heat gained from sunlight shining through the windows. Reflective film on large windows that do not have blinds is also a good idea.
• Consider adding adding a power ventilator for your attic. This can reduce the heat levels in your attic which will reduce the heat load on the home that requires cooling.
• Utilization of ceiling fans can allow you to feel more comfortable at a higher set point on your thermostat lowering utility cost.
• Verify your attic is properly insulated. A minimum of R30 is recommended which is typically around 12”of blown in insulation.
• Have your air conditioning professional verify the ductwork for your air conditioner is sealed. Air leaking from or into your ductwork can cause much higher than normal utility cost and adversely affect comfort levels.
• Current North Carolina code requires R8 duct insulation values most ductwork older than a couple years does not meet this standard. A properly sealed and insulated duct system is essential to a heating and air conditioning systems actual efficiency.
