Safety Week Day #5: Slips, Trips, and Falls
Slips, trips, and falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction, but the good news is that most of them are preventable. From uneven surfaces and poor housekeeping to unprotected openings and working at height, the risks are everywhere...but so are the controls. At Quandel, we stay ahead of hazards by keeping work areas clean, marking and securing openings, using proper access equipment, and staying aware of our surroundings at all times.

Extension ladders demand discipline every time they are used. Proper setup using the 4 to 1 rule, securing the ladder, maintaining 3 points of contact, and avoiding overreaching are non-negotiable. Most incidents happen from simple mistakes, so we slow down, set it right, and use it right.

An A-frame ladder is not a shortcut to height; they are a tool that must be used correctly. Keep them fully opened and locked. Never use the top step or cap, and always maintain balance within the rails. If the task does not feel stable, it is not the right setup. Take the time to choose the safer option and work smart.

Welcome to Safety Week 2026!

At Quandel, safety isn’t a box we check; it’s how we build. This week is a reminder that every task, every decision, and every person on site plays a role in getting everyone home safe.
Construction comes with real risks. From falls and heavy equipment to heat stress and mental health, hazards are everywhere. But they’re manageable when we plan ahead and stay alert. The key is simple: match the hazard to the task and control it before work begins.
Here’s what that looks like in action:
• Plan the week. Know your tasks before you start.
• Identify the risks. Every job has them, so don’t overlook the obvious or the hidden.
• Follow the plan. SOPs, training, and the right equipment exist for a reason.
• Speak up. If something doesn’t look right, stop work and fix it. No exceptions.
