Galvan Industries, Inc.

Galvan Industries, Inc. Galvan Industries is the largest capacity job shop galvanizer in the Southeast. Our objective is to In 1988 the pickle capacity was increased by 70%.

A Brief History of Galvan Industries

Originally founded in 1958, the facility was acquired by Charles and Clarence Willard as a subsidiary of Willard Industries in 1960. Willard Industries was a lead smelter and specialty fabricator located in Charlotte and the acquisition made good business sense due to the demand for zinc coatings and lead fabrications. The original plant was equipped with a 10

' x 3' x 4' kettle and was suitable only for relatively small parts. In the early 60's the kettle capacity was expanded to 27' in length to facilitate larger fabrications and structural steel. As demand for galvanized products increased the kettle was again lengthened in the early 70's to 32'. Two tanks were increased to three and size increased from 40'x 6'x 7' to 45'x 6'x 7'. In 1991 the galvanizing kettle size was increased from 32' to 42' x 4'6" x 8'6" giving us the largest galvanizing kettle in the Southeast. In 1996 we took down the old concrete galvanizing building and replaced it with steel. During these recent changes the height over the kettle increased from 15' to 40' and the square footage under roof increased by 30%. The number of hoists increased from 4 to 6 and hoist capacity and crane capacity over the galvanizing kettle increased from 6 to 15 tons. The bridge crane rails system was also extended to run the full length of the building. These recent changes have allowed Galvan Industries to remain the largest capacity job shop galvanizer in the Southeast. Our objective is to provide steel fabricators and manufacturers with high quality, fast delivery and personal service for their galvanizing requirements.

Galvan offers KETTLE TAGS® PLUS material ID system to increase efficiency and eliminate errors!

Galvan Industries has a solution to material identification problems for its customers: The Kettle Tags® Plus, tagging system. Unlike paper tags or embossed metal tags, Kettle Tags can stay on your material through all the steps in the galvanizing process, including the acid dip and the molten zinc bath, and still be legible afterward for identification later at a job site .

This increases efficiency, eliminates improper handling and provides greater traceability with fewer errors for our customers. Kettle Tags cost less, too, about half the cost of other tagging systems used by our customers.

At Galvan Industries, quality is standard operating procedure. All galvanizing must pass through our in-house Quality Control and Assurance Program. From the time your steel enters our facility until it leaves, we work to ensure that the galvanized coating is in compliance with specifications. This involves carefully following our established best practices for surface preparation, galvanizing, and inspection.

Our in-house Quality Control and Assurance Program is among the most stringent in the industry. It was developed during production of nuclear safety related products and conforms to Nuclear Quality Assurance requirements. All our finished work conforms to ASTM, AASHTO, AMPP or Mil Specs. Galvan is a member of the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) and is involved in developing and maintaining industry-wide standards for galvanizing quality. We were instrumental in the AGA's development of a QA program and strongly support its use.

Galvan's On-Site Storage and Staged Deliveries Improve Workflow on Large Projects!

On a recent large solar power project, Galvan rust-proofed steel piles for more than 583,000 solar panels. Approximately 200 truckloads of steel moved through our facilities in Harrisburg, NC, during the project.

All the steel was shipped to Galvan where it was stored until needed. With 35 acres of open storage, we had plenty of room. Some of the material was shipped directly from the mill to our plant, where we cut it to length before galvanizing.

After galvanizing, we stored and transported the finished material to the project site in our own trucks, in staged deliveries. As part of the staging process, we color-coded the steel to identify different lots for scheduled shipments. All the steel was delivered to the job site as needed, streamlining operations in the field.

At Galvan, we don't just dip steel in molten zinc, we partner with our customers to deliver the highest quality galvanizing plus services that save time and money!

Galvanizing Large Steel Structures with Progressive Dipping

When a fabrication is too large for single immersion it may be possible to galvanize it by progressive dipping, immersing one end of the work at a time in the galvanizing bath.

Galvan Industries’ hot dip galvanizing kettle is 42′ long x 4’6″ wide x 8’6″ deep. The large bath size, in conjunction with modular design techniques and “progressive” or “double dipping” will allow almost any structure to be galvanized with greatly reduced maintenance costs and extended life.
