Meet our newest interns! Earlier this week, we gathered together in York from all across Pennsylvania and West Virginia for our annual kick-off event, designed to immerse our newest team members in HRG’s culture, make connections, and launch a summer of meaningful professional development. The two-day celebration began with a casual social at Bridgewater Public House to encourage networking and relationship-building with food and fun games. The next day the interns learned about our services and employee-ownership model from company leaders and met their mentors for the IDEA program (in which interns assemble in teams to collaborate on a project of their choosing). They also participated in team-building activities to get to know each other better. We’re thankful to the interns for traveling to York so we could all be together and to everyone who worked hard to bring this event to life. Let’s have a great summer!

Our team recently contracted with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to help close the one of the top 10 trail gaps in Pennsylvania (as designated by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources): a segment of the Appalachian Trail in Port Clinton where hikers currently cross active rail lines. We’re conducting a feasibility study to evaluate up to 3 alignments that safely separate trail users from these rail lines, while navigating challenges such as property coordination, constrained right-of-way, and ADA accessibility.

Our team is also working with the City of Bethlehem to close another one of Pennsylvania’s top 10 trail gaps: the South Bethlehem Greenway to Saucon Rail Trail connection. We’re designing a 12-foot wide paved trail over the existing rail bed. This includes grading and drainage improvements as well as landscaping. Our work including preliminary engineering, final design, bidding, and construction observation.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the City of Bethlehem, and all of their partners on these two projects, which will provide vital recreation opportunities and promote economic activity in the region.

Last month, Kaye Goodman celebrated her 25th anniversary working at HRG, and we wanted to take a moment to recognize the impact she’s had on our work and on our culture. Kaye is a senior project manager in our Capital Solutions group. She helps clients identify and structure financial strategies for their project that optimize project cash flow needs and long-term affordability. She skillfully matches projects to available federal and state funding programs and helps our clients maintain compliance by providing ongoing accounting, construction, and financial control reviews. She sets a high standard for quality and generously supports the people around her. We are lucky to have Kaye on the team and look forward to celebrating more milestones like this with her. Congratulations, Kaye!

You’ll enjoy the close-knit relationships in these small, but rapidly growing offices while being part of one of the region’s largest and most respected civil engineering firms: enjoying stability, professional development programs, and extensive resources to support true work-life balance. That crystal blue water in the first picture below is the Susquehanna River, and those people on the boat are there to observe geotechnical borings being taken to understand the underlying geology before a new water main is horizontally directionally drilled under the river next year. Our team is designing this new water main for the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority to replace two existing cast iron mains dating back as far as the 1920s, which have both surpassed their life expectancy. HRG partnered with Kleinfelder to complete the geotechnical investigation and rock and soil laboratory testing, while Parratt-Wolff performed the borings.

Geotechnical borings like this provide critical subsurface information that helps our team evaluate constructability and refine the HDD design and installation approach. The borings allow us to characterize soil and rock conditions along the proposed drill alignment, assess groundwater conditions, determine the feasibility of horizontal directional drilling, and identify the appropriate drill tooling and installation methods. This information is also used to evaluate borehole stability, drilling fluid performance, anticipated production rates, and the potential for inadvertent drilling fluid returns.

Our project manager Colton Seagrist and staff engineer Shaylan Cobb observed the borings, and our surveyor, Bo Aumiller, captured the drone photos. Colton has extensive experience with land-based borings, but said this was the first time he was able to observe water-based borings and really enjoyed the new experience. “It was notable because the work was highly visible,” Colton said. “Typical water main projects are underground and out of sight, but this project was featured in several newspaper articles and generated significant discussion online. Hopefully this visibility helps the public better understand the level of planning and effort that goes into the infrastructure that serves them.”

Thank you to Kleinfelder and Parratt-Wolff for their assistance and to Williamsport Municipal Water Authority for their continued trust in us. This project is currently in the preliminary stage of design and is part of a larger water transmission main replacement project from the authority’s filter plant into the City of Williamsport. Approximately 21,000 linear feet of transmission main will be replaced.

When the flowers are blooming and the sun is shining, this world sure looks pretty, and we like to do our part to keep it beautiful by picking up trash along the roadway. Our Harrisburg, Lewisburg, and Pittsburgh teams all participate in PennDOT’s Adopt a Highway program, donning brightly covered vests twice a year to clean up a section of roadway in their local community. Here are a couple photos of the crews doing their work. Thanks to everyone who volunteers their time to participate.

Earlier this month, close to 400 of our employee-owners gathered together to celebrate the phenomenal growth and success we’ve created together over the past 3 years: achieving rapid increases in revenue, staff size, and geographic footprint while creating impactful, award-winning projects across the mid-Atlantic region. These Employee-Owner Day celebrations reinforce our culture of connection and care – for each other and for the long-term best interests of the team. They also give us a chance to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities lying before us.

That’s exactly what our speakers did: Our CEO Jason Fralick talked about the progress we’ve made toward our 2030 growth goals and the efforts we’re undertaking to position ourselves for the next phase of HRG’s evolution. Futurist Erica Orange helped us understand how to navigate the shifts AI is bringing to our world and our work: emphasizing adaptability and human traits like empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. Both gave us plenty to think about, but the highlight of the day was being together (and getting an up-close view of the sloth currently on exhibit at our host location, the Whitaker Center for Science & the Arts). We want to thank everyone across the company who worked so hard over the past year to plan this event and every employee-owner who traveled to be with us – some rising before the sun to get there! It’s

Last week, our senior project engineer Jason Chesla graduated from the Leadership York program, and our team was there to celebrate and show support. Over the past 9 months, Jason has committed close to 200 hours to enhancing his leadership skills, learning about York County’s needs, and building relationships with many organizations addressing those needs. We want to congratulate Jason on this accomplishment and commend him for his commitment to volunteer service.

Programs like Leadership York align well with HRG’s commitment to community impact, and several members of our team have graduated from similar programs in Harrisburg, Delaware County, Franklin County, and more. Jason shares his thoughts on the experience below.
