Show up to an interview at one of these companies in a suit and you'll look like a clown.

Show up ready to work instead. Boots, Carhartt pants, a hoodie. That's what a contractor wants to see when you walk in.

And don't just call.

Bring a resume, try to talk to somebody, and if they turn you away, come back the next week.

None of that costs you anything, and it puts you ahead of every apprentice who's only ever picked up the phone.

Our founder has twenty years in and a master's license in Connecticut. You'd think that'd be enough to go work in the next state over. It's not.

To get licensed in Massachusetts, he had to sit for their whole exam. Twenty years didn't skip him past a single question.

People don't get why the states don't just match each other. It's because every state runs its own code. Massachusetts has its own amendments, its own book, rules that are different from Connecticut's. You've got to know their code to work there, and the exam is how they make you prove it. So he took it, passed it and now holds the master's in both.

Nobody hands you anything for time served. You need to earn it again every time you cross a state line.

Nothing on my morning list ever slips through the cracks. I do it every single day before anything else.

Off the top of my head, I'll write down what has to be done and what's the priority. Then cross it off as I go. Do that every day and it trains your subconscious to get the job done.

You're not chasing the work anymore because you already know what has to happen, so you just go do it.

I've run my whole life this way, the business and everything else. Same list every morning is what keeps me moving instead of just reacting to whatever comes up.

Want to know if a guy really does fire alarm? Ask him if he'd touch a system on a Friday.

A real fire alarm guy won't. He knows once he opens it up, one wrong move and he's chasing it all weekend.

So he doesn't crack a system open at the end of the week. He waits till Monday when he's got the runway to do it right. Nobody has to teach him that. He learned it the hard way at some point, just like our founder did.

That's the kind of thing you can't fake your way through, and it's exactly what we look for before we put anyone on your fire alarm work.

Most apprentices these days are trying to pick a job based off one thing. The paycheck.

They call me freshly graduated, and no contractor wants a green kid as a temp. I can't place them, but I do spend a few minutes coaching them up. I tell them to do the research instead. A good contractor will teach you the trade properly, and that's worth more than anything on your check right now. A bad one will pay you the same and leave you knowing nothing.

So when you're weighing companies you have to think about what you'll actually learn there. The money will come after you've got the skills.

Our electricians have pulled knob-and-tube out of buildings most crews won't touch.

It's some of the earliest wiring this country ever ran. Open conductors, no ground, dangerous by today's standards.

You don't usually find it until you're already gutting an old building for an apartment conversion. Once it turns up, the job doesn't move until it's out. No insurance company is signing off on a building with active knob-and-tube still in the walls. So now the renovation's stalled, and you're tearing old wire out of a structure that's half-finished, doing it clean enough not to touch anything you shouldn't.

That's the kind of call we get. Our founder has done this work himself, so he knows exactly who on our team can actually handle it.
