Our team just returned from a challenging yet successful research trip in Svalbard, Norway, where we were participating in research for our ongoing maternal den study and testing whether synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, can be used to find, and hence protect, polar bear dens hidden under the snow.

Upon his return, Polar Bears International's director of field operations BJ Kirschhoffer chatted with us about the season’s challenges, the progress made, and how, in the end, the team managed to get the work done. Link in bio ⬆

Our scientists flew a radar known as UAVSAR over California’s wildfire burn areas to aid in firefighting efforts and identify future hazards such as landslides. Did you know ARTEMIS also has a facility in Spanish Fork, Utah that is home of our Cessna O-2A Skymaster test-bed known as “Whiskey-Bravo"? It is configured to carry multiple SAR systems. This is where the SAR system testing and data processing takes place.
