New Jersey Steel Baron, LLC was founded by Aldo Bruno to provide the high-quality steels and resources necessary to produce the blades, swords, cutlery and other art being created by modern day knife-makers and blacksmiths. We pride ourselves on our dedication to the individual, whether new to a forge or master smith. By creating lasting relationship it is our hope to better connect each of you to

the education, information, and materials needed to continue in a craft so many have come to love, cherish, and find purpose in. We are working towards having a facility and website where makers, manufacturers, and hobbyists can source reliable, quality, high-carbon steels at reasonable prices. Eventually, we hope to expand our abilities to connect various professionals, educators, and suppliers to help the community to grow. We promise to work with each of our customers to find the best steel, formula, or method for whatever project they may be working on. There is a lot to learn about the art of knife-making and it is our sincere venture to help create a closer community, allowing for faster growth and the spread of ideas.

QUALITY RESULTS EVERY TIME

Another batch of AEB-L VS blanks headed to .

This one starts before the waterjet ever turns on. We verify the material, load the sheet, cut the customer’s profiles, and inspect the blanks afterward. When someone is relying on those parts for production, consistency starts with getting the material and the cut right from the beginning.

Our waterjet service can handle everything from a single prototype to ongoing production work, with CAD assistance available when a design still needs to be made cutting-ready.

IT’S THAT EASY

Rusty stock in. Clean, workable steel out.

Wide belt grinding removes surface scale, oxidation, and rust while leaving a cleaner, more uniform finish that’s easier to scribe, lay out, machine, or take straight into stock removal. It’s a practical middle ground between hot rolled and precision ground steel.

MAGNACUT HAS LANDED

Another shipment of CPM MagnaCut has arrived at New Jersey Steel Baron.

This reel follows the steel from unloading and unpacking through inspection and preparation for inventory. More sheets are getting ready to head into knife shops and become the next round of custom builds.

MagnaCut was designed specifically for knives by metallurgist Larrin Thomas. The goal was to combine the toughness and edge retention associated with steels such as CPM-CruWear and CPM-4V with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Testing found toughness well above many common powder-metallurgy stainless steels, edge retention comparable to steels such as CPM-CruWear, CPM-4V, and S35VN, and corrosion resistance that exceeded 20CV.

Its fine carbide structure also promotes edge stability and makes MagnaCut relatively manageable to grind and sharpen. Depending on heat treatment and blade geometry, it can work well for kitchen knives, EDCs, hunting knives, outdoor blades, folders, and larger fixed blades. Higher hardness ranges can be especially useful for fine-cutting kitchen knives, while a more balanced heat treatment can emphasize toughness and general-purpose performance.

CUT MORE. BUILD MORE.

Waterjet cutting chef knife and oyster shucker blanks for Bill Harley.

These two designs serve very different purposes, but both can move from a cutting-ready file to accurately shaped steel within the same project. Waterjetting gives makers the flexibility to produce different models, test new ideas, and prepare batches without being limited to a single profile.

M390 IN STOCK

Available now in .125″, .156″, and .187″. Shop through the link in our bio.

M390’s development began with Böhler K190, a powder-metallurgy version of D7 designed for high wear resistance with improved toughness and machinability. Böhler later modified K190 to provide stainless levels of corrosion resistance while retaining its wear-resistant properties.

The patent application for M390 was submitted in 1989. One of its earliest documented knife uses came in 1999, when German knifemaker Dietmar Kressler made a utility knife from Böhler M390 Isomatrix steel. The later introduction of 20CV and CTS-204P helped bring this alloy family into wider production use.

Today, M390 is known for excellent corrosion resistance, prolonged edge retention, high potential hardness, and relatively easy sharpening for its level of wear resistance.

This carousel was created using research by Larrin Thomas of , particularly his article, “M390 Steel—History and Properties (and 20CV and 204P).” Visit their page for the complete history and a deeper examination of M390’s metallurgy and performance.

14C28N IN STOCK

Produced by Alleima in Sweden, 14C28N was developed specifically for knife blades. Its fine-grained structure provides an excellent combination of toughness, edge stability, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening.

14C28N performs similarly to AEB-L, but its nitrogen content provides additional stain and corrosion resistance. With a typical hardness range of 58–62 HRC, it is a versatile option for kitchen knives, everyday-carry knives, hunting knives, and outdoor blades.
