NJ Steel Baron, LLC NJ Steel Baron is dedicated to supplying materials and services to the cutlery and blade industry from hobbyist to production shop.

New Jersey Steel Baron, LLC was founded by Aldo Bruno to provide the high-quality steels and resources necessary to produce the blades, swords, cutlery and other art being created by modern day knife-makers and blacksmiths. We pride ourselves on our dedication to the individual, whether new to a forge or master smith. By creating lasting relationship it is our hope to better connect each of you to the education, information, and materials needed to continue in a craft so many have come to love, cherish, and find purpose in. We are working towards having a facility and website where makers, manufacturers, and hobbyists can source reliable, quality, high-carbon steels at reasonable prices. Eventually, we hope to expand our abilities to connect various professionals, educators, and suppliers to help the community to grow. We promise to work with each of our customers to find the best steel, formula, or method for whatever project they may be working on. There is a lot to learn about the art of knife-making and it is our sincere venture to help create a closer community, allowing for faster growth and the spread of ideas.

Thick steel is where the waterjet really gets to work.

Cutting forging die blanks from roughly 1.8" thick S7 tool steel. The reel starts with the finished die set, then backtracks to the heavy S7 stock, thickness check, waterjet cut, and the freshly cut blank coming off the table.

S7 is a shock-resistant tool steel built for high-impact applications, making it a strong choice for forging dies like these.

Waterjetting lets us cut material this thick without putting a heat-affected zone into the steel, leaving a clean near-net blank ready for machining and the rest of the die-making process.

The satisfying part after the waterjet finishes.

These knife blanks stay connected to the sheet by small tabs during the cut. Once the run is done, we work through the sheet, pop each blank free, and separate it from the remaining skeleton.

Tight nesting lets us fit a lot of different profiles into the material while keeping the blanks consistent from part to part.

From sheet to liners.

Waterjetting Tiger Flipper liners from 1/8" 6Al-4V titanium for .

The sheet comes off the rack, gets checked for thickness, loaded onto the OMAX, and nested for the run. After cutting, the liners are separated from the sheet and stacked up for the next stages of production.

And there’s another reason we wanted to show this one: 6Al-4V titanium is coming to the NJSB website soon.

From a sheet of .125" AEB-L to a stack of ready-to-work blanks.

Running the Buttercup and Mako designs for . The parts are tightly nested to make good use of the material, then the profiles, holes, and other features are cut on the waterjet before the blanks come out of the sheet and move on to the next stages of production.

AEB-L is a fine-grained stainless blade steel with a great combination of toughness, corrosion resistance, edge stability, and sharpening response — a solid choice for working knives like these.

One sheet. A whole lot of knives.

This one is all about the payoff — popping finished blanks out of a tightly nested sheet after the waterjet does its work.

Different profiles, different sizes, all packed together to make the most of the material. Once they’re out, the blanks are ready for the next stages of the build: grinding, heat treat, handles, finishing, and everything else the maker puts into them.

Keeping the waterjet fed.

Water alone isn’t doing all the work when we cut steel. Our OMAX waterjets run at 60,000 PSI, with abrasive garnet added to the stream to give the jet the cutting power needed for blade and tool steels.

This is part of the less glamorous side of waterjetting — refilling the abrasive hopper so we can keep the machines cutting.

Every piece of our barstock starts as a larger sheet.

We cut the sheet down into barstock, deburr and clean the edges, then shelf it so it’s ready to be pulled when orders come in.

That lets us stock the same steels in a wide range of thicknesses, widths, and lengths so you can order the size that fits your build.
