We had a fantastic time at the University of Idaho Fall Career Fair, the University of Washington Engineering Hiring Expo in Seattle and Gonzaga University Fall Career Fair last week!

Ethan Thompson, Staff Engineer, and Cooper Faker, Intern, are on site at the Junction at Kathleen development in Coeur d'Alene, conducting geotechnical exploration for the future connection of Junction Way and Building Center Drive. Geotechnical drilling helps engineers understand soil and groundwater conditions before construction begins, ensuring a safe and reliable foundation for future development.

10 Years at ALLWEST! 🎉

James Thomasson, P.E. | CEO / President

James began his journey with ALLWEST in the Engineering Department at our Hayden office, and from day one, he stood out. Not just because of his British accent, but because of his positivity, humility, and willingness to jump in and help wherever he could.

It was clear from the beginning that James wasn't simply here to be an engineer. He was here to be part of a team. He believed in helping others, supporting the company, and contributing to ALLWEST's growth in any way possible. Whether it was tackling an engineering challenge, addressing an operational need, or simply lending a hand, James always approached it with enthusiasm and a team-first mindset.

Those same qualities that made him a valued teammate a decade ago are the same qualities that ultimately led him to the role of CEO. His commitment to our people, clients, and culture continues to help guide ALLWEST forward today.

Ever wonder what it takes to make a chip seal roadway last?

It starts long before the first rock hits the pavement.

Our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) team plays a key role in making sure the materials, equipment, and application methods are all working together to create a durable roadway. That includes:

🔹 Evaluating aggregate size and shape to help the stone lock together properly
🔹 Testing compatibility between the aggregate and asphalt emulsion
🔹 Recording application rates of the equipment and timing the placement sequence from oil application to aggregate placement, and from aggregate placement to rolling
🔹Counting and timing roller passes to help ensure minimum rolling requirements are met within the specified time window
🔹 Performing testing in accordance with recognized AASHTO and ASTM standards to support quality and long-term performance

This summer, our Hayden team provided on-site testing and quality control for chip seal work along Spokane Street, Idaho Street, Greensferry Road, and Seltice Way in Post Falls, Idaho. The project used a ½-inch chip aggregate, which is larger than the ⅜-inch chip traditionally used in the area. Throughout construction, our technicians monitored application rates, embedment, and material performance to help ensure the new design delivers the durability and performance the community expects.

From the lab to the job site, our team helps make sure every detail is right so our roads can serve the community for years to come.

We're excited to welcome Ryan DeMars, P.E. to our Missoula Engineering team.

Ryan brings more than nine years of experience in geotechnical engineering, leading teams of field technicians and managing projects across a variety of challenging environments. His background includes notable ski resort development and construction projects in complex mountain geology throughout the region.

Ryan earned his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Montana State University-Bozeman and is a licensed Professional Engineer in both Montana and Wyoming. He began his geotechnical career as a soils field technician in Denver, where he quickly distinguished himself through his technical skills and leadership potential. This led to an opportunity to help launch a new branch in Bozeman, Montana, playing a key role in getting the business off the ground and supporting its early success.

Today, Ryan brings that same expertise, leadership, and passion for geotechnical engineering to ALLWEST, and we're excited to see the impact he'll have on our clients, projects, and team.

When he's not working, you'll likely find Ryan skiing, mountain biking, or enjoying live music.

This week, we join the construction industry in recognizing Construction Su***de Prevention Week and it's 2026 theme: Building on Progress.

Building on Progress means honoring what’s working while continuing to push forward. It’s about breaking down barriers, fortifying pathways to help, and building a culture, where asking for support is seen as a sign of strength — not weakness.

Progress is happening but there is still important work to do. At ALLWEST, we believe that looking out for one another is just as important as the work we do every day.

The 2026 Pledge is simple but impactful:
