We’re experiencing a large Pigeon-related outage in Hays right now, affecting customers roughly from Old 40 and Vine St. north to 27th, and east of Vine. Our phone system has also been affected, so we cannot take inbound calls at the moment. Crews have cleared the bird, and are replacing a blown transformer in a substation and checking for other damage before re-energizing.

It’s HOT out there the next few! That’s why our crews are starting outdoor work early, to wrap up before the worst of the heat sets in each day. Here, one of the Hays crews is replacing poles that failed inspection off of Centennial Blvd. Stay safe, folks, and hydrate a LOT! 🥵

Looking for an easy way to save on demand this summer? Consider running your clothes dryer before 3 p.m. or after 7 p.m. to avoid summer peak hours. A standard clothes dryer uses about 5kW, which could add approximately $30 in demand charges if it's running during this timeframe. This small change could make a big difference!

We’re loving this summer! With the frequent rains, everything is so green. The humidity that comes with it has us starting early, like this Hays crew starting before 7 a.m., replacing a storm-damaged pole before the heat hits this afternoon. Stay safe out there, and Happy 4th!

A message from our CEO:

We appreciate the efforts of our employees during storm restoration and the patience and support of our members throughout the process. A photo we shared earlier of linemen gathering materials from a trailer is a reminder that many people contribute behind the scenes, including:

- Processing and dispatching outage reports
- Keeping crews supplied with materials
- Helping crews reach damage sites through muddy conditions
- Delivering meals to crews in the field
- Reserving overnight accommodations
- Using drones to assess damage on remote lines
- Coordinating public communications

Together, these tasks help restore power safely and as quickly as possible. Valuable support also comes from Midwest Energy members, families, and friends in the form of compliments, meals, drinks, and prayers for workers’ safety. Thanks, everyone; we win as a team.

FINAL UPDATE 9:00 P.M.: We’re down to around 250 customers without power, a huge improvement from over 3,500 outages at the peak. Customers west of Highway 25 regained power around 4:30 p.m. as the result of two days of work from many crews. The video in this post shows a mile stretch of over 20 structures which required replacement.

Multiple crews are focused on the area east of Highway 25 with a couple more hours to work still tonight. Our hope is to have these customers back on this evening, but please make arrangements for overnight in case the power is not restored.

Plans for tomorrow are to continue repairs north of Colby. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
