Why do some laundry rooms seem to run effortlessly while others constantly struggle to keep up?

Most people assume the difference is the equipment.

In my experience, that's usually not the case.

The best-performing laundry rooms are designed around workflow.

Laundry moves efficiently from washing to drying to folding. Staff aren't walking unnecessary distances. Carts aren't blocking access. Equipment, storage, and folding areas work together as a system.

I've seen laundry rooms with older equipment outperform rooms with newer equipment simply because the layout and workflow were better.

A well-designed laundry room can improve productivity, reduce labor, and help equipment perform at its best.

I put together a quick article on what separates the best-performing laundry rooms from the rest.

Laundry Tip: Your Utility Bills Might Be Trying to Tell You Something

Most laundry equipment problems don’t suddenly appear.

Dry times get a little longer.

Water usage slowly increases.

Utility costs creep up over time.

Because these changes happen gradually, they often go unnoticed.

That’s why utility bills can sometimes reveal problems before equipment does.

A few things to watch for:

• Dryer times getting longer
• Water usage creeping up
• Utility costs increasing while production stays the same
• Equipment working harder to keep up

I put together a quick breakdown on what your utility bills may actually be telling you.

Laundry Tip: Bigger Isn’t Always Better

One of the most common things I hear is:

"We need bigger machines."

And sometimes that’s true.

But I’ve seen facilities upgrade to larger laundry equipment and still deal with:

• Backlogs
• Staff waiting on machines
• Bottlenecks during busy periods
• Laundry still falling behind

Because larger equipment doesn’t automatically improve performance.

Laundry rooms work as systems. Washers, dryers, workflow, extraction, and capacity all have to work together.

Sometimes bigger equipment simply moves the bottleneck somewhere else.

I put together a quick breakdown on when larger equipment helps—and when it can actually create new problems.

Laundry Tip: Is Your Laundry Room Undersized?

If your laundry room always feels like it’s trying to catch up, it might not be the equipment.

It might be the system.

A few signs:

• Laundry carrying over
• Backlogs during busy times
• Staff waiting on machines
• Running longer hours just to keep up

I put together a quick breakdown on how to spot this.

Laundry Tip: 5 Warning Signs Your Laundry System Is Slowing You Down

Most laundry rooms don’t have an equipment problem.

They have a system problem.

If your operation feels like it should be keeping up… but isn’t, here are a few signs to look for:

• Dry times creeping longer
• Staff waiting on machines
• Loads backing up during busy periods
• Utility costs climbing
• Running longer hours just to keep up

Most of the time, it’s not one big issue.

It’s a small bottleneck somewhere in the process that starts affecting everything else.

I put together a quick breakdown of what to look for and how to fix it.

Laundry Tip: Your Dryers Might Not Be the Problem

A lot of laundry rooms assume long dry times mean they need better dryers.

But in many cases, the real issue happens before the load ever reaches the dryer.

If washers aren’t removing enough moisture, dryers have to run longer to compensate.

That leads to:

• Longer dry times
• Higher gas usage
• Slower throughput

Improving washer extraction can often reduce dryer time more than upgrading the dryers themselves.

Question:
How long are your dryers running per load right now?

Laundry Tip: There’s Usually One Thing Slowing Everything Down

Most laundry rooms I look at have one common issue:

A hidden bottleneck that limits how much laundry they can actually process in a day.

It’s usually not the size of the washers.

It’s things like:

• Washer extraction speed
• Dryer cycle times
• Equipment mismatch
• Workflow and layout

A system might have the capacity to process over 1,000 pounds a day… but never actually reach it.

Small inefficiencies add up fast.

I put together a quick breakdown of what to look for and how to fix it.

Laundry Tip: Throughput Matters

When I look at a laundry operation, one of the first things I evaluate is throughput.

Throughput is simply how much laundry your equipment can process in a day.

Many people focus on washer size when they buy equipment, but the real question is how quickly the entire system can move laundry through the room.

For example, a laundry room with 300 pounds of washer capacity running about 1.25 loads per hour can theoretically process over 1,000 pounds of laundry per day.

In reality, throughput is often limited by things like:

• Washer extraction speed
• Dryer run times
• Equipment mismatches
• Laundry room layout

Small changes can sometimes make a big difference.

If you’re curious about the capacity of your current laundry setup, feel free to send us your washer sizes and number of machines and I’d be happy to take a quick look.
