Bundle up my friends. It's a bit chilly. I had an old friend who is no longer with us always say,
"Bundle up, kid. Father Time pi**ed off Mother Nature but good this time." Heard it so many times I knew exactly when he was going say it. Not sure the validity of his statement but I do know the damage the extremes in temperature can cause.
Been cold enough now that pipes are going to start freezing. Damage can compound quickly. Just a quick reminder to leave cabinets open on kitchen sinks, bathroom vanities any pipes on outside walls. Sillcocks prone to freezing should be valved off. Another option if not able to be shut off and drain, is to leave dripping ever so slightly. Hoses should disconnected from frost frees.
Thermostats should be taken off night setback. Zones stay off for a long period and definitely have the potential to freeze. Hold a temp 70-72⁰. Stone foundations with drafts can be dealt with by heat lamps.
Outdoor tanks need additive. Biodiesel law only compounds the problem. Verify heat tape is plugged in and working. Plywood keeps the bitter wind off the tank.
An ounce of prevention is worth alot during a cold spell. Enjoy the beauty, bundle up, cuddle up, sip hot chocolate, stoke the fire.....whatever makes you smile. The thing about New England is if you dont like the weather, you don't have to wait long for it to change.
