Blue Ridge Biofuels got its start in 2005, in Asheville, NC. In 2015, we expanded to a new factory in Catawba County, NC, where we have dramatically increased our production.

Since then, we have also relocated our headquarters to Hendersonville, NC, where we continue to serve our biodiesel and cooking oil recycling customers across the Southeast.

We currently recycle over 14 million pounds of Used Cooking Oil per year into clean burning biodiesel!

Why is BioHeat better?!

1. It’s a sustainable alternative, giving us cleaner air and a healthier environment.
2. It’s made from local, renewable resources, so it increases our energy independence.
3. It strengthens the local economy, supporting jobs at Blue Ridge Biofuels, restaurants where we buy used cooking oil, and farms growing oil crops.
4. It’s better for your furnace because it has higher lubricity, so it reduces wear and tear on engine components.

Want to know how biodiesel works in your vehicle? Or which diesel vehicle to purchase if you’re interested in using biodiesel?

Our team has developed A Guide to Using Biodiesel in Diesel Vehicles on our website. It includes useful information such as fuel quality, fuel hoses, fuel filters, and much more.

We have also compiled a comprehensive Diesel Vehicle List of cars and trucks from 1980 to 2013. Remember to research the make and model you are planning on buying to learn from other owners who have used biodiesel in their vehicle. Every vehicle is different and some run better on high blends than others.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has developed a Biodiesel Handling and Use Guide for those who blend, store, distribute, and use biodiesel and biodiesel blends. It provides basic information on the proper and safe use of biodiesel and biodiesel blends in compression-ignition engines and boilers, and it is intended to help fleets, individual users, blenders, distributors, and those involved in related activities understand procedures for handling and using biodiesel fuels.

Have you been to The Gas Up to see the new mural?!

We recently collaborated with Jared Wheatley at Indigenous Walls Project to paint a new, fresh look for our biodiesel pump station in West Asheville.

This project was born out of the Intertribal Graffiti Jam last fall, featuring 12 artists, 10 tribes, and 8 murals.

Have you seen the new mural yet?! Comment below and let us know what you think!

Q: Can biodiesel help slow "global warming"?

A. A 1998 biodiesel lifecycle study, jointly sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Agriculture, concluded biodiesel reduces net CO2 emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel when methyl alcohol is used as a feedstock.

Biodiesel produced from biomass-derived ethyl alcohol can have close to a 100% net carbon emission reduction compared to petroleum fuels. This is due to biodiesel's closed carbon cycle. The CO2 released into the atmosphere when biodiesel is burned is recycled by growing plants, which are later processed into fuel.

It contains no sulfur and is carbon neutral. Nearly every pollutant category is reduced compared with petroleum diesel.

New bioheat tax credit available for homeowners!

Under the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, homeowners are now eligible for tax credits of $600 for installation of new oil/biofuel blend-compatible heating appliances. The credit is available to homeowners on an annual basis and capped at $600 per year.

In order to qualify for the $600 federal tax credit, the following conditions must be met:

Equipment must have 2021 Energy Star ratings (87 AFUE for oil boilers and 85 AFUE for furnaces)
and be certified by the manufacturer to burn heating oil blended with a 20 percent biodiesel or
renewable diesel fuel. This equipment is available now.

Q: What is biodiesel?

A: Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel produced from plant oils or animal fats. The scientific name is fatty acid methyl ester (FAME).

Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in any compression-ignition (diesel) engine without the need for modifications.

Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, and nontoxic. Biodiesel is rapidly gaining acceptance around the world, due in large part to its many health and environmental benefits when compared to regular diesel.

Biodiesel is not to be confused with burning pure vegetable oil in a diesel engine. This practice is known as SVO (straight vegetable oil) and does require modifications to the engine. There are also risks to your engine's longevity with using SVO but that is not the case with biodiesel blends.
