We close out the week by shipping pallets of ice melt to:

Colorado Springs, CO
Henderson, CO
Jacksonville, FL

Hazelwood, MO
St Peters, MO

Prepping all these LTL pallets takes so much room though! We add cardboard on the corners for protection on their long truck ride, each has to be labelled, and we need to organize by carrier (4 different LTLs today!)

(Maine Salt does not sell individual pallets to people around the country. We have a customer that does, who drop-ships from us.)

I found a cross-sectional representation of the (now closed) Penobsquis mine in New Brunswick. The potash deposits lay on the edges of the up-thrusting salt deposit. The rock salt is mined in room and pillar method, wherein you excavate rooms and leave huge salt pillars to hold up the ceiling. You can never full excavate all the salt.

The vertical nature of the potash deposit led to a different method. They worked from the bottom up, excavating the ceiling and back-filling the space with mine waste and tailings. You chip away at the ceiling, add material to build up the floor, and repeat the process.

Operations were moved 1/2 mile across the road where a new mine shaft was drilled 1 km down. Apparently, the potash deposits there lie flatter, but they are only mining salt currently as it is cheaper to mine potash in Saskatchewan and ship it by rail all the way to St. John, NB for export.

On some bagged ice melt products, potassium chloride is often listed as an ingredient. That's potash, by the way. Potash deposits and halite (rock salt) deposits go together.

We've never listed potassium chloride as an ingredient, because we've never added it to our product. Any amounts present are naturally occurring with the rock salt.

Today, we received salt that was clearly mined near the edge of the cut where it transitions to potash. Here are some of the very distinct crystals from that potash transition. Pure potassium chloride would be white, but the mineral form, sylvite, oftan has traces of iron oxide creating the pink color.

We were happy to finally ship to Florida this fall ... And now have done so 3 times!

(To be clear, we do not sell individual pallets around the country. We have a customer who does and drop ships from us.)

It was not on our bingo card to finally ship a pallet of salt to Florida, especially not in September, but here we are. Carvana planning ahead for Super El Niño weather.
