In addition to construction, It's not hard to imagine how drones could be used to create virtual tours of commercial real estate, national parks, and more.

South Lakes is a beautiful residential & commercial area in Reston Virginia. It’s literally a series of lakes running through the middle of Reston.

You may have noticed we did not post last week. Our website went down as a result of incompatibility between software upgrades. This meant that all my product development and marketing/sales activities came to a complete stop until we could get the website issue figure out.

This is just normal drama when you’re starting a business, but it’s not anything you can put into a business plan or revenue projection.

I’d like to recognize three vendors that really helped us out:
WordPress , APLUS (website host) , Elementor (WordPress plug-in).

Their technical support teams really stepped up to help figure out and fix the problem. It’s good to remember that when you pick a vendor, it’s not just the software to consider. The backend operational support is super important.

Color Grade

Aerial photography is more than just flying drones.

The ability to properly color grade photos and videos is essential for creating the best images. Color grading is the process of adjusting the colors in a photo to create a certain mood or effect.

Ask your drone provider if they provide in-house color grading and post-production.

Municipalities can use aerial imagery to enhance their marketing campaigns by showing local attractions or events.

I've lived in Herndon for 10 years now, and it's changed a lot recently. New condos are popping up everywhere.

I've started to feel like a NIMBY when it comes to new housing. To document this change, I’ve started taking drone videos of the area.
So far, the footage has turned out great. I'll be posting aerial videos regularly so follow my posts if you're interested.

Delivery Drones?

The “big thing” in UAV applications is drone delivery. I am very pro-technology (obviously), but having some experience with drones my main concern is BIRDS.

Besides being a classic “fail”, this video shows what happens to a drone when anything hits a propeller.
I’ve experienced something close to this many times when birds (ravens and hawks are particularly aggressive) see my drone as an adversary and decide to attack.

It generally leads to an “Oh Sh.t” moment followed by some fast maneuvering to land the drone safely.

Even with drone highways to regulate movement, I haven’t seen any plan for birds. Delivery drones will be flying over people and cars. It just takes one pissed-off bird, and you may find a drone crashing into your windshield.

In-House Drone Program

If you’re starting an in-house drone program, here are three initial things you'll need to take into account.

1. You'll need to make sure you have the staff and resources in place to operate the program effectively. This includes training, licensing, insurance, and capital and operational expenses.

2. Develop a clear set of policies and procedures governing the use of drones, as well as create a process for managing data and tracking flight activity.

3. You'll need to consider how you'll integrate the drone program into your overall business operations. A clear set of desired outcomes and ROI will help management set expectations.

Hiring A Drone Pilot

Aerial photos or video footage can enhance your next advertisement project. But before you hire a drone pilot, there are a few questions you should ask them.
1. Ask about their experience. They should have a portfolio of work to show you.
2. Ask about their insurance coverage. I recommend a $1M minimum, especially if flying over people or cars.
3. Ask to see their FAA license. The FAA requires commercial drone pilots to obtain a license.
There's more to ask, but if they can't answer these basic questions then find someone else!

Lightwave Aerial is proud to support the APECS construction firm. We provide periodic aerial site surveys to generate photos and video of the construction site

This customer uses proprietary construction techniques so security was a major concern for them. Since all of our free hosted web reports have multi-factor authentication, the customer was very happy with our process.

The customer requested only raw video, to minimize the cost. But they also indicated that they wanted to use the video for marketing. Raw video tends to be very choppy and only useful for internal communications. So I knew raw video probably wouldn’t work for them.

We created a short produced video, at no extra charge, to make sure the customer had something they could use (we’re only showing the intro section).

It took extra time but the customer was happy. I’m hopeful that we’ll eventually get a return on that invested time, but even if we don’t, I believe that giving away value is a good business philosophy.

I’ve been thinking about drone flight restrictions around DC.
Last fall I obtained a beautiful video of Algonquin Park in Northern Virginia. The Northern VA area is particularly tricky for drone missions because
(1) we’re so close to DC with its very complex flight restrictions and waiver processes
(2) the many federally owned lands in the area, none of which allow drones
(3) Dulles Airport

Algonquin park sits adjacent to federal lands where drone flights are prohibited. It’s strange that the area where I flew is uncontrolled airspace which did not require FAA flight authorization. However, if I had flown about 20ft – 30ft in one direction I would have entered a “no-fly” zone and been in violation of federal law.

This highlights the need to have your drone pilots well-trained in airspace restrictions if you plan to sponsor flights anywhere in Northern VA, DC, or Southern MD.

Make sure you ask your drone pilot if the flight area has any restrictions. And if there are restrictions then have them explain their process to apply for flight waivers.
As the drone employer, you have significant liability if your pilot violates FAA regs on your behalf.
I figure the government takes enough of our money, let’s not give them anymore.

I took this indoor drone video earlier this year at a local gym that opened near my house. The manager let me do an indoor proof-of-concept mission and I gave him some free video and pics as a thank you.

It went well. I was also able to create an indoor interactive virtual tour with the drone. The one scary thing was they had these huge fans in the ceiling that created weird up- and down-drafts. Flying near the fans required a little extra stick control, but everything worked out well.

AND I ended up joining the gym! It had been 2-years since I'd worked out in a gym (thanks COVID), and I forgot how much I enjoyed it.

AND that meant I could sell the free-standing punching bag that's been in my garage for the past two years ($50 on Craigslist).

AND that means I can now park my car in the garage.

How is it possible that a drone can so dramatically improve one's quality of life?
