🔬 Apprenticeship opportunity with The Marine Biological Association! 🦀

The Marine Biological Association is recruiting a Laboratory Technician Apprentice (Level 3) based in Plymouth, UK. This 18-month Apprenticeship offers the chance to develop practical laboratory and technical skills while supporting research focused on ocean health, marine ecosystems, and climate change.

You'll gain experience working with scientific equipment, laboratory procedures, and health and safety practices across a range of research laboratories. There may also be opportunities to assist with research aquarium work and occasional field activities at sea.

📍 Plymouth, UK
📅 18-month fixed-term
💰 Starting salary: £15,392 per annum
⏰ Full-time (37 hours per week)

🦠 PhD Opportunity: Parasites of Native & Invasive Crustaceans 🦀🔬

The Institute of Parasitology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Košice, Slovakia) is offering a PhD position focused on understanding the diversity and evolutionary relationships of parasites associated with native and invasive crustacean species across Central Europe. The project combines field sampling in natural environments with advanced molecular and laboratory techniques, providing strong interdisciplinary training in parasitology, biodiversity research, and ecology.

🦀 Applicants should have:
• A Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Biochemistry, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, or a related Natural Sciences field
• Good command of English
• Motivation for both fieldwork and laboratory-based research

🦀 The position offers:
• A funded 4-year full-time PhD position
• Support through the Seal of Excellence SoE/2025/61/MSCA4Uk project
• Coverage of research costs, including sampling, laboratory work, and publication fees

This full time position involves:
🦐 Field based surveys of benthic invertebrate communities in Chesapeake Bay
🦐 Laboratory work including genetic and taxonomic identification
🦐 Data entry and QA/QC
🦐 Fieldwork on small vessels and travel during sampling seasons
🦐 Research focused on marine ecology, estuarine systems, and aquatic invasions

The Ocean Census Species Discovery Awards support taxonomists, biodiversity researchers, and community scientists working to bring unknown marine life to light, particularly through legacy collections and “dark materials” (specimens stored in museums and research institutes but not yet analysed).

💰 Award: USD $5,000
