Saving an Idaho Icon: A Race Against Time and the Elements in Sagle

Right now, a piece of North Idaho history is fighting a losing battle against the unforgiving elements and we are stepping in before it's too late.
This beautiful log home out in Sagle is in critical condition. The old finish has completely failed, leaving the raw logs totally exposed to moisture, rot, and blistering UV rays. To make matters worse, the old school mortar chinking is cracking, pulling away, and literally falling out of the joints.
When chinking fails and the stain gives up, a log home loses its armor. Right now, moisture is trapping itself inside the walls, and wood rot is actively setting in. Left alone, the damage will become catastrophic, threatening the very structural integrity of the home. It is quite literally a life or death situation for these logs.
We are moving our mobile restoration rig onto the Sagle property to halt the damage and reverse the clock. Here is the rescue plan:

Media Blasting: We will safely blast away every trace of the failed, dead stain to expose clean, healthy wood without harming the logs.

Rot Repair: We are tackling the active rot head on, treating and repairing the compromised areas to stop the decay in its tracks.

Modern Chinking & Staining: We will seal the entire structure with commercial grade, flexible chinking and a heavy duty protective stain from Sashco Log Homes to lock out moisture for years to come.

A log home is an investment, a legacy, and a piece of the great Pacific Northwest. When the weather tries to tear it down, we build it back stronger.
📸 Stay tuned for the transformation photos as we bring this Sagle home back from the brink!

Mission Accomplished: From Suffocating to Stunning!

This log home just finished its restoration.

We started with a house that was literally gasping for air trapped moisture, hidden mildew, and a finish that was doing more harm than good. But after some serious grit, a lot of media blasting, and miles of sanding, the transformation is complete.

We gave this home the full CPR treatment:

✅ Clean: Stripped away the past and cleared out the damage.

✅ Protect: Sealed deep into the grain to stop rot in its tracks.

✅ Restore: Locked it all in with a finish from Sashco Log Homes that actually lets the wood breathe and shine.

There is nothing quite like seeing the natural grain of a log home pop for the first time in years. This beauty isn't just restored, it’s ready to stand tall against the elements for decades to come.

Out with the Old, In with the Bold!
The dust has settled, the old, failing finish is officially history, and this home is finally breathing again!
We’ve spent the last few days in the trenches media blasting away years of damage and hand sanding every log to perfection. It was a battle against trapped mildew and bad decisions, but look at that raw wood! It’s like these logs just went to the spa and came out 20 years younger.
The heavy lifting is done. The "scars" from the pressure washer are gone. Now comes the best part...
We’re officially moving into the final stage of CPR:
Clean? Done. ✅
Protect? Done. ✅
Restore? STAINING STARTS NOW!

Stay tuned we’re about to lock in this beauty and give these logs the armor they’ve been waiting for.

Not every "fix" is a solution. We’re currently on-site at a log home that had a rough run-in with the wrong process.
The Story: A previous attempt to clean the logs with high-pressure washing didn’t just fail, it pushed moisture deep into the wood. To make matters worse, it was stained before it could properly dry, trapping that moisture and creating a breeding ground for mildew under the finish.
Now, the home needs more than just a wash; it needs CPR.
C - CLEAN
We’re stripping back the failed finish and the mildew to get down to the healthy, raw wood. No shortcuts, no trapped moisture.
P - PROTECT
Using the right preservatives to ensure those logs are defended against rot, bugs, and the elements from the inside out.
R - RESTORE
Applying a professional-grade finish from Sashco Log Homes at the right moisture level so it looks incredible and, more importantly, it lasts. Stay tuned for the results.

The Lesson: Don’t let a "quick fix" turn into a long-term headache. When your logs are gasping for air, give them the professional CPR they deserve.

Project Complete: The Masterpiece is Sealed!

And just like that, the restoration is officially in the books! We’ve gone from weathered, graying logs to a beautifully preserved, natural finish that’s built to last.

To wrap things up, we just finished the final and perhaps most tedious step: Sealing the log checks. These are the natural cracks that form as logs season and dry over time. While they add character, they can also be an open door for trouble if they aren't handled correctly.

The Final "Did You Know?"
You might think those cracks are just cosmetic, but they are actually dynamic!
Interesting Fact: Log checks are "alive" they can open and close by as much as 50% between the humid summer and the dry winter. Because the wood is constantly moving, we can't just use standard caulk. We use high-performance, elastic sealants ( Conceal by Sashco) that act like a rubber band, stretching and compressing with the home.
By sealing the upward-facing checks specifically, we’ve eliminated "water traps" that lead to internal rot and sent a clear "No Vacancy" sign to carpenter ants and beetles looking for a place to nest.

The Result:
A home that looks raw and organic, but is technically armored against the Montana elements. It’s been a privilege to bring this cabin back to life!

Phase 4: The Finishing Touch – Bringing the Grain to Life! ✨
The wait is over! We are officially in the home stretch. Today, we’re applying the final layer: Cascade by Sashco Log Homes
Since we’re keeping this home’s look completely natural, we’re skipping the heavy pigments and going straight to this high-performance clear coat. It’s the "icing on the cake" that gives the wood a beautiful, clean glow without changing its organic color.

Why we use Sashco Cascade:
I get asked a lot why we don’t just use a standard hardware store sealer. Here’s the difference:

It’s Breathable: Logs are alive—they expand and contract. Cascade is a water-based formula that allows moisture to escape from the wood while keeping the rain out. This prevents the peeling and blistering you see with cheaper products.

Maintenance Made Easy: One of the coolest things about this product is that it’s designed for the long haul. In a few years, when the logs start to look a little dull, we don't have to strip it back down to bare wood. We just clean the surface and apply another coat of Cascade to bring that "just-finished" look right back.

Eco-Friendly: It’s "nose-friendly" (no harsh chemical smells) and cleans up with just soap and water, which is better for us and the surrounding Montana landscape.

Interesting Fact:
Did you know that Cascade actually acts as a protective shield for the chinking too? Because it’s crystal clear, we can spray it right over the sealants without discoloring them. It helps keep everything—from the logs to the joints—water-repellent and resistant to mold and algae.
Stay tuned for the final reveal. Once this coat dries, the transformation from weathered cabin to restored masterpiece will be complete!

Phase 3: The "Invisible Shield" is On! 🛡️
The sanding is officially wrapped up! The logs are prepped and ready for the next step. While it’s tempting to jump straight to the finish, we’re taking the time to handle the most important part of the job: Total Protection.
We are currently spraying on a specialized wood preservative. This isn't just a surface layer, it’s a heavy-duty insecticide, fungicide, and mildewcide all in one. We’re essentially "vaccinating" the home to ensure these logs stay healthy and rot-free for decades to come.
The "Why" Behind the Spray:
Here’s a quick tip for log home owners: Wood is organic. Without a professional-grade preservative, bare logs can become a "buffet" for wood-boring beetles and a breeding ground for fungi.
By applying this now while the wood pores are wide open from sanding, the treatment soaks deep into the grain. It creates a barrier against pests and decay without changing the look of the wood.
What’s Next?
Since we aren't adding any pigment or stain to this beauty, the next step is all about highlighting the natural grain. We'll be moving straight into the clear coat to seal everything in while keeping that raw, organic wood look.
Stay tuned, it’s about to get that final, clean glow!

The Dust Has Settled: Phase 2 is Here!
We just wrapped up the media blasting phase, and the results are incredible. We’ve stripped away the years of weathered finish and graying wood to reveal the fresh, "bright" logs hiding underneath.
Did You Know?
A lot of people ask why we don't just use a pressure washer. Here’s the "why":
Media blasting is a "dry" process using crushed glass or to gently lift old finishes. Unlike water, it doesn't force moisture deep into the wood fibers, which means we don't have to wait weeks for the logs to dry out before we can move to the next step. It’s faster, safer for the wood, and keeps the integrity of your home intact!
What’s Next?
While the blasting does the heavy lifting, it can leave the wood feeling a bit fuzzy or textured. Now, our team is moving in with the sanders to hand-buff every inch. This ensures a perfectly smooth surface so the new stain can soak in deep and look like a million bucks.
Stay tuned—the transformation is about to get even better as we prep for the finish!

Every log home has a story, but sometimes that story gets hidden under years of old, weathered stain. 🏚️
We just arrived at this beautiful cabin, and the current finish is tired, peeling, and most importantly, no longer protecting the wood. When the stain fails, the logs are vulnerable to the elements. That’s where we come in!
The Plan:
Media Blasting: We’re going to safely strip away the old, "lifeless" layers to reveal the fresh, raw wood underneath.
Restoration: Once we have a clean slate, we’ll apply a premium finish to bring back that deep, rich glow and provide years of protection. 🛡️
There is nothing more satisfying than watching a log home "wake up" during the restoration process. You won’t believe the difference once we’re through!
