Of the estimated 29 billion gallons of water used daily by households in the United States, nearly 9 billion gallons, or 30 percent, is devoted to outdoor water use, according to EPA’s WaterSense program. In the hot summer months, or in dry climates, a household’s outdoor water use can be as high as 70 percent.

A new report from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters' Institute for Water Resources says that water needs are increasing, which means water storage and flood risk management are needed.

But major new surface infrastructure projects seem unlikely and water storage underground (managed aquifer recharge or ) is an alternative to augment surface storage:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Institute for Water Resources (IWR) released a report on May 14 titled Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: Water Security Through Resilience.
