In September 2020, ZeroAvia created history with a world-first flight of a six-seat aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Now that achievement and our subsequent breakthrough flight testing and technology development are celebrated in one of the world's most prestigious aeronautics museums!

On the National Mall in Washington DC, the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution is hosting an exhibition entitled "Aerospace and Our Changing Environment" in The Allan and Shelley Holt Innovations Gallery (Gallery 105 on the first floor), and it features the 250kW powertrain from ZeroAvia’s first hydrogen-electric flight testing.

From the Wright brothers first flight at Kitty Hawk, through the first steps on the moon, right up to the recent milestones in hydrogen-electric flight, the museum is an absolute must visit for any aviation and engineering enthusiasts visiting DC this spring and summer.

First high-speed prop spin of the Dornier 228 powered by liquid hydrogen (LH2) fuel! Watch below!

Over the past few weeks at Cotswold Airport, we've reached several important milestones in our liquid hydrogen flight test programme. LH2 is crucial for delivering hydrogen propulsion for larger airframes because it's significantly more energy dense in terms of volume than gaseous hydrogen. With a hydrogen-electric powertrain already retrofit into the Dornier 228, it's a perfect testbed for our first explorations of LH2-fueled flight.

Most recently, we achieved the first LH2-powered high speed propeller spin on the Do228 testbed aircraft at our LH2 test facility. A meaningful technical milestone and a strong reflection of the team's work across various departments.

As we close out the year, these results provide a solid baseline for the next phase of testing and into first flight. Val, our founder & CEO, shares his thoughts on the milestone and what to expect as we head into 2026!

A major breakthrough in our prototype evolution was embracing Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) - an additive manufacturing technique to allow rapid development cycles and combine multiple functions into new streamlined monolithic structures.

This innovation transformed our design, resulting in a lighter, more compact, and cost-efficient solution.

First liquid hydrogen refill complete ✔️

Another major milestone achieved in our LH2 Flight Programme!

Yesterday, our team at Cotswold Airport in Kemble successfully completed the first-ever filling of the newly installed Air Liquide liquid hydrogen tank onboard our Dornier 228 testbed.

After a full process run-through and four hours of coordinated work, we reached a "full status". The LH2 tank has a capacity of 16kg of hydrogen and is holding the fuel at -253 degrees Celsius.

A proud moment for everyone involved and an exciting step toward clean flight. More to follow as we prepare for the next stage of testing – feeding hydrogen from the tank to the fuel cells to then provide power to the electric motor and spin the left-side propeller. We’ll keep you updated!!!

Inside our Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) Facility! 👀

Our LH2 Facility at the Cotswold Airport is now positioned to support the next phase of our LH2 Flight Test programme. After towing our Do228 testbed aircraft to the site a few weeks ago, we've been preparing the facility for full operational capability.

Here's what sets the facility apart:

✈️End-to-End LH2 Refuelling
We now have the capability to safely and efficiently refuel the Do228 with LH2 - a critical step toward real operational readiness.

✈️A Dedicated Testing Hub
From ground and flight testing to small-scale LH2 system evaluations, this is where we will rigorously test LH2 fuel cell systems and their components.

✈️Advanced Infrastructure
With Air Liquide's super vacuum insulated LH2 trailer, equipped with an LN2 shield - we're able to minimise boil off, reduce hydrogen losses, and conduct consistent, high fidelity testing.

Our site is the launch pad for the next phase of LH2 flight testing. Stay tuned for more updates!

Another significant achievement for the team - we have officially been awarded Design Organization Approval (DOA) by the UK CAA, marking a crucial step toward certifying our hydrogen-electric engine.

This milestone represents a key enabler on our journey to obtaining a Type Certificate for the ZA600 - our 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain, which, once commercialized, will allow thousands of aircraft to fly cleaner, quieter, and more economically.

A huge congratulations to the team for making this possible!

A first look at our Full Engine Test Facility ✈️

We’re pleased to share photos our Full Engine Test Facility in Kemble, UK, which includes buildings dedicated to hydrogen tanks, fuel cell PGS and electric propulsion system (motors and inverters).

Testing the key components of the ZA600 system in isolation has provided the confidence to bring the full powertrain together in a dedicated ground test “copper bird” facility. The thermal test cell allows full simulation of the oncoming airflow at 150kt of forward flight at full thermal capacity, allowing us to test the entire system in full-fidelity flight conditions.

This setup enables us to stress test the full engine operation through various parameters with a high degree of safety and provides the bedrock for assembling certification-relevant ground test data.
