Hawai‘i is the world’s largest producer and exporter of queen honey bees, according to the Department of Agriculture’s Hawai‘i Apiary Program. Beekeeping is a major industry in the state.

Our grad student Ning has been awarded the East West Center's Graduate Fellowship Award, which will allow him to continue his studies on honey bee nutrition for the next year! Congrats!

Depending on your area, it appears drone season has begun. Which means swarm season will also be starting. Time to get extra boxes and frames ready for swarm catching!

The lab was able to participate at this years Variety Food Showcase at KCC. We gave out tasting samples of various local honeys. We thought our display was awesome, treating honey like fine wine!

We love to see lots of adults bees, brood and honey in a honey bee colony. However, a lot of times we tend to overlook the highly important pollen stores (bee bread).

In Hawaii, even bees have to live apartment-style!

But seriously, this was our first swarm catch of the year!!! A very ambitious queen decided to swarm on top of an existing colony, so we lured them into a nuc placed on top of the colony. Don't worry, it has its own place in the yard now ~
