Friends and customers: We have very cold weather coming into Alabama in the coming week. First of the season. It is good practice to prepare your house. Faucet covers on the outside spigots. If you have a cutoff to an outside spigot, close that and then open the spigot. If you have plumbing fixtures on an outside wall, leave the cabinet door open. As we are in the South, very few plumbers have equipment to thaw pipes. If something freezes but does not burst, find out in advance how to shut the water off to the entire house. Best of luck, and if you need us, call 205-822-7286. Garrett Hoover Plumbing, LLC

Late in the summer. Time to treat your condensation lines from your AC units with a bit of chlorine bleach. Thx!!

Freeze Warning: Thanks to a customer this morning, and a relative here in town, this advice rings true: If you are going out of town during this cold weather, and no one home to monitor, shut the water off to the house! Keep your thermostat at a normal temp (as if you were there). This way, if you do have a pipe burst, little or no water damage will occur!

Freeze warning! Outside faucets: You can make these less resistant to freezing by doing the following:
If you have cutoffs inside for the faucet, turn that off then open the outside faucet. If you don't have inside cutoffs, then you can get a faucet protector from a big box store or local hardware store (Bluff Park Hardware). This device goes on the faucet outside, covers and insulates it from the cold, and most of the time helps keep it from freezing. If you have a hose connected to the faucet, disconnect the hose. More to come...

Good morning! It is crunch time for folks in the Birmingham area to get ready for very cold weather coming at the end of the week. Starting at about 3am Friday morning, the temperature will drop below freezing, and will not go above freezing again until 1pm on Sunday, for just a little while. This spells out a frozen pipe plumbing emergency! You have several days to prepare for this cold weather. In the next few posts, I will spell out some tips on how to keep your plumbing system working and undamaged through this unusually cold weather for Alabama.

First tip: Know how and where to shut off your water supply to your house or business. For some, there is an accessible shutoff in your basement or cellar. For others, there might be a cutoff in the garage. For all, you can turn off the water at the meter, with a meter key. In many suburban towns, the local fire department will shut off your water in an emergency. Stay tuned for more tips!! (feel free to repost or cut/paste these posts to anyone you think might benefit!)

-Maintaining effective social distancing when possible
-Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at every opportunity

-We can also avoid any direct contact by speaking with you on the phone while at your residence.

Please let us know if you have any special requests, and we will work to make sure we can keep our relationship going strong throughout this difficult time. We are all in this together!

I ran onto two different yet similar situations this week. Both involved customers that were convinced that they had a major expenditure coming because of a water service leak. But, both ended up with a bill for a service call from me. I was able to observe and determine the real leak, which both were minor. Many other companies would and/or could have charged a large amount for a replacement. And these customers would have never know the difference. So...if you need a plumber, call us. We will make sure you are treated fairly and honestly!
