Shop Manager

About J&J Energy Solutions
J&J Energy Solutions is a growing wind energy company based in Morris, IL with two core business lines: a custom machine and fabrication shop producing specialized wind industry tooling — from hand tools to full drivetrain shipping stands — and a field services division specializing in up-tower machining, welding, and general maintenance. We are a relationship-first company that takes pride in innovation, quality, and doing things the right way.

The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Shop Manager to join our team and help lead our fabrication and machining operations. This is not a desk job. You will be on the floor working alongside the team — welding, fabricating, and running machines when the job calls for it — while also owning the day-to-day management of shop personnel, workflow, scheduling, and quality.
If you've worked your way up through the trades, know how to lead by example, and take pride in both the work and the people around you, we want to talk.

Responsibilities

Oversee daily shop operations including scheduling, workflow management, and production priorities
Work alongside the team as a hands-on contributor — welding, fabricating, and machining as needed
Lead, mentor, and develop shop personnel while maintaining a positive and accountable culture
Ensure quality standards are met on all jobs and products
Communicate proactively with ownership and leadership on status, issues, and needs
Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient shop environment
Support quoting, job planning, material ordering and process improvement initiatives
Vendor relations

Requirements

Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in welding, fabrication, and/or machining
Minimum 2 years in a lead, supervisory, or management role (or equivalent demonstrated leadership experience)
Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
Strong working knowledge of shop equipment, tooling, and manufacturing processes
Ability to hold yourself and others accountable while maintaining a team-first attitude
Self-starter with strong communication skills — you don't wait to be told, you figure it out

Nice to Have

Experience in the wind energy, heavy industrial, or precision manufacturing sector
Familiarity with CNC machining operations
AWS or CWI certification
Experience managing custom or low-volume production environments
