Before mechanical transformed our industry, a crowded theater during the summer was no small challenge.

Around the turn of the 20th century, some theaters

housed entire basement cooling plants where massive centrifugal fans, driven by steam engines, forced air across tons of melting before delivering the cooled air through large ventilation ducts to the audience above. These systems required constant attention from on-site engineers, making comfort as much a labor-intensive process as an engineering achievement.

Today, we routinely design systems capable of precisely controlling temperature, , pressure relationships, filtration, and indoor air quality in environments ranging from operating rooms and semiconductor fabs to data centers and museums. Looking back at these early ice-based systems is a reminder that while the technology has changed dramatically, the engineer's mission has remained remarkably consistent for more than a century: create healthy, comfortable, and reliable indoor environments through innovation.

Sometimes it's worth looking back to appreciate just how far the industry has come.
