A spacecraft about the size of a microwave oven just helped NASA prove two important technologies for future Moon missions!

When it launched in 2022, CAPSTONE successfully tested a fuel-efficient orbit around the Moon. Instead of retiring the spacecraft, NASA continued to use it as a testing ground for new lunar technologies that astronauts and robots will depend on as we return to the Moon to stay.

This Goddard-developed tech will allow spacecraft to navigate without constant contact with Earth, and store critical data in the event of a disruption until a signal connection becomes available again.

Developed at NASA Langley, SCALPSS, or Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies, will fly on four commercial lunar landers in 2028 as part of NASA’s Moon Base Program.

The instrument helps researchers understand crater formation and the characteristics of ejected materials during landings—critical insight as larger landers touch down closer together. Last year, SCALPSS captured this first‑of‑its‑kind imagery during Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1.

Listen as Moon Base Program Manager Carlos García-Galán talked about the importance of SCALPSS during the lander announcement on June 30.

Artifact of the Week: Flag that Flew Above the Glomar Explorer

In the early 1970s, Howard Hughes announced the construction of the Hughes Glomar Explorer, a gigantic vessel ostensibly designed to mine the ocean floor for manganese nodules. This was a CIA cover story to conceal the Glomar's true mission: recovering a sunken Soviet submarine from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

On 4 July 1974, the ship began its two-month-long covert salvage operation, all the while allaying suspicions from curious Soviet ships nearby. This flag flew atop the Hughes Glomar Explorer during its daring mission.
