"what about my roof? I don't want damage on my roof."
A common question that makes perfect sense. The roof already falls apart, how much faster will it happen with some big panels screwed to it??
Well, what causes damage to our roof now? Storm damage, wind, tree branches, hail. What about sunlight?
(Did you know ultraviolet radiation and thermal expansion work together to break down asphalt shingles over time?)
So we can call it exposure. The reason we have to replace our roofs is they are exposed.
What would have solar on the roof do to that exposure?
These images of a homeowners solar install using FLIR images (thermal radiation) shows:
- Neighbors exposed roof is 20 degrees hotter than his
- The areas of his own roof that are uncovered are hotter INSIDE the house
Most solar racking systems attach to the rafters of the house, so pe*******on is minimal, and a lot of installers can provide warranties on the roof for up to 30 years.
If solar makes the inside of the house cooler, what do you think happens to the AC usage?
If solar protects our roofs from exposure and high heat, what do you think solar does to the life and health of the roof?
