A pull-away on a transfer hose can empty a line onto the ground or deck in seconds. The right coupling helps manage that risk, but breakaway, dry-break, and cam-lock couplings are not interchangeable.

🔹 Breakaway couplings are designed to separate and seal when a defined load is reached, helping protect the hose, equipment, and surrounding area during an unintended pull-away.

🔹 Dry-break couplings let crews disconnect with minimal spill or product loss, making them useful when transfer cleanliness, containment, and quick changeovers matter.

🔹 Cam-lock couplings are simple, effective, and widely used. Their locking arms must be checked on every connection to confirm they are fully engaged and secure.

Three styles. Three different jobs. The best choice depends on your product, transfer conditions, connection frequency, and the consequences of a pull-away or spill.

That fl**ge leak may not be a hose problem at all.

The gasket, and how it is installed, often does the real sealing work. Before blaming the hose, maintenance teams should check:

Spiral-wound or sheet? Match the gasket style to the service, fl**ge design, pressure and temperature requirements, and fluid. Select a gasket material that is compatible with the fluid, not just one that fits the line size.

Inspect the fl**ge faces for corrosion, scoring, warping, dirt, or old gasket residue. A new gasket cannot compensate for damaged or unclean faces.

Confirm the correct bolt pattern and use a cross-pattern torque sequence for even compression. Always follow the gasket and fl**ge manufacturer’s torque requirements instead of guessing.

After the first thermal cycle, re-torque when the application procedure calls for it. Heat and cooling can change bolt load and reveal a small leak before it becomes a shutdown.

These checks are practical, inexpensive, and often help prevent leaks, product loss, and avoidable downtime. The right gasket matters, but the right installation matters just as much.

A hose can be built for demanding service and still fail early if it is routed incorrectly.

Many premature failures begin with routing issues, not material failure:

• Bending the hose tighter than its rated minimum bend radius
• Leaving the assembly unsupported so its weight loads the fitting
• Twisting the hose into position
• Routing it where it rubs against a structure or sharp edge

Protect hose service life by:

✓ Respecting the rated bend radius
✓ Supporting the assembly along its length
✓ Avoiding twist during installation
✓ Using the correct fittings or adapters instead of forcing the routing

Fun fact: “diesel-rated” does not automatically mean a hose is compatible with every renewable diesel or biodiesel blend.

Fuel blends can change the requirements for your hose and fittings. Before service, verify:

• The exact fuel blend
• Tube and cover material
• Temperature range
• Working pressure and vacuum requirements
• Connection hardware and fitting compatibility

UL 330B covers certain dispensing hoses for diesel fuel and blends up to B20. It is not a universal approval for every fuel-transfer application, blend, or operating condition.

The right specification depends on the complete application, not just the word “diesel” on a product description. If you are changing fuel blends or selecting a new assembly, check the full application with a hose specialist before putting it into service.

Skipping even one factor can lead to a mismatch, delivery delay, leak, or early failure.

S, Size: What inside diameter, length, and wall size are required?
T, Temperature: What heat or cold exposure will the hose handle?
A, Application: Is it being used for suction, discharge, transfer, or another service?
M, Media: What fluid or material will move through the hose?
P, Pressure: What working pressure and vacuum ratings are required?
E, Ends: Which couplings, fittings, or connection style are needed?
D, Delivery: When does your operation need the hose?

Before winter conditions arrive, verify:

✓ The hose’s rated low-temperature range
✓ The cover and tube for cracks, hardening, or visible damage
✓ Fittings, couplings, clamps, and connection points for wear or looseness
✓ Whether the assembly still bends and routes properly in colder conditions
