Twenty years ago, Geno Shawler's career in the crane industry took an unexpected turn with one simple question: Could he head to Wyoming to help out with rigging and truck driving? With a background in heavy equipment maintenance, he agreed. What he didn’t know was that this decision would set him on a path that would shape the next two decades of his life. On his first rig move, he was asked if he had done it before. His answer was an honest “Nope.” That moment marked the beginning of a journey that would take him from the field to crane operations, branch and regional management, and ultimately safety leadership: now serving as Sterling Crane USA's Director of Safety. Along the way, he learned that some of the most meaningful opportunities begin when you step into the unknown. From managing operations to helping rebuild teams and strengthen safety programs, every chapter brought new lessons.
Today, Geno’s story is a reminder that growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone. His advice to others entering or building a career in the crane industry is simple: work hard, stay humble, take pride in every job, and treat people right.
At Sterling Crane USA, we’re proud to recognize the people whose experience, dedication, and willingness to step up help shape our team and our industry. For Geno, the greatest measure of success isn’t how far you climb, but the lessons you learn, the people you help, and the impact you leave behind.
