I believe the following information regarding the maximum communications ranges of Garmin Alpha GPS systems (and Astro systems, too) will be useful to anyone Garmin Alpha user.

Communication range depends on several factors. I will list them and try to explain how to optimize your setup.

# 1. Terrain.
= The fewer hills or areas of dense vegetation there are, the greater the range. We cannot control this, but simply being aware of it can solve some problems. No 8

# 2. Proper equipment usage.
= a) The collar comes with two antennas: 47 cm and 57 cm. There is a ~15–20% difference in range between them.
= b) The Alpha 100 handheld unit used to come with two antennas: 12 cm (~5”) and 34cm (~14”). There is a 20–30% difference in range between them.
= c) The closer the receiving/transmitting antenna is to a body (human or dog), the shorter the range. Statistics from Russia show that ~15% of users strap the antenna against the collar strap, thereby reducing communication range by at least 30%!!
IMHO, there are users like that in the USA, too ;)).
= d) The more upright the antenna on the collar stands, the greater the range. A perfectly straight collar antenna increases range by an average of 20% compared to the standard antenna, which has a bend radius of ~14”.

- 3. Antenna efficiency (the receiving antenna on the handheld unit and the transmitting antenna on the collar).
= Better antenna = greater range. It seems obvious, but...
I haven't yet come across manufacturers (or even suppliers) in the USA for such antennas who guarantee specific range increases.
Nevertheless, such antennas do exist (Russian speakers can check out YouTube reviews by searching for "антенны для Гармин от СТВ-Урал" / "Garmin antennas by STV-Ural").
I brought several units (representing about 20% of the product line) to the USA. For each antenna type, the correspondence between specifications and actual range increase has been repeatedly tested and verified by hunters in Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Poland, and Belarus.
Full range of performance improvements:
- for active hunting antennas: +30% to +150% range!
- for long-range search antennas: +250% to +380% range!
(performance demonstration is free;
3-year warranty against manufacturing defects!)

- 4. Interference on the radio channel in use.
= Try changing the ID.

- 5. Equipment malfunction

Among other malfunctions there’s two we concentrate ourselves :
- loss of operating range (malfunction).
- lack of working distance (insufficient operating range of fully functional equipment).

1. Range restoration / collar repair: $70–$90. Range restoration / handheld unit repair: $30–$50.

2. Increase in the operating range of properly operated equipment:
$25 - $70.

= Compare with a known working unit belonging to a colleague.

This page is dedicated to troubleshooting Garmin Alpha and Astro equipment, particularly models that the manufacturer has discontinued supporting. We accept the following units for repair and refurbishment:
Astro 320, Astro 430, Alpha 50, Alpha 100, -200, and -300 handhelds;
and DC-40, DC-50, T5, T20, TT15, and TT25 collars (including their variants).

I am an RF and microwave communications engineer, and since 2015, I have been working specifically on this issue in Russia (running a family business that manufactures antennas).

We offer repair services for older Garmin devices with a 6-month warranty.

Garmin has discontinued support for older models, but we not.

We offer new way to solve problems with your equipment!

1. Dry, rot, tear gps strap at your DC-50, T5, TT15 collars …… - It will never be a problem, if we move GPS inside. After this - High reliability and ease of repair allow these devices to operate almost indefinitely.

2. Lack of distance for some users ……

Unlike the large number of poorly understood Chinese-made antennas,
Our (R&D) company produces special UrAn (Ultra Range) antennas, which can significantly improve this devices performance. We garantee 150, 200, 250% distance for hunting antennas and 300 - 700% for seach/recovery antennas. All our products ware heavily tested and approved by our users in Russia (since 2014).

This group was created to show users how things could be better.
