Safety is of the utmost importance! It is always best to ensure trash collection room access is only permitted to qualified maintenance personnel who are trained in compactor and chute safety procedures. The apartment tenant in this news story was allowed keys and unsupervised access to the compactor, with tragic results.

A Palatine man was crushed to death in a trash compactor as he searched for his missing cell phone, authorities said.

While the details in this story aren't clear as to the cause of this incident, we always strongly advise everyone not to lean into the opening of a chute intake door for any reason, to avoid any accidents or falls that can cause injuries or worse.

An elderly woman reported missing Saturday was found dead Monday at the bottom of a trash chute in the Near North Side high-rise building where she lived.
