From dirt to done—this is where things start getting real 👊

On Martin & Cindy’s art studio, we’ve officially gone from block and fill (gravel stage) to a poured and finished slab. The inspection is behind us, concrete is down, and now we’ve got a solid foundation to build on.

This is one of those big milestone moments on a project—everything that comes next sits on this. Grateful for a smooth inspection and a clean pour by the team.

Next up… framing starts to bring this studio to life 🔨

🎥 Project Update: Martin & Cindy’s Detached Art Studio 🎨🏗️

We’re making great progress on Martin and Cindy’s detached art studio here in Madison!

The block-and-fill foundation is complete, with the rock fill installed, and we’ve now moved into slab prep. In this video, you’ll see the v***r barrier and wire mesh in place, getting everything ready for the concrete slab pour next.

This is a big milestone and sets the foundation—literally—for what’s to come. Stay tuned as we continue bringing this custom space to life!

Another major milestone on this project 🧱🏗️

Here you’re seeing the block foundation installation, using a block-and-fill foundation system. This method provides strength, stability, and long-term support by combining reinforced masonry block with properly compacted fill.

Big shoutout to Danny Hicks 👷‍♂️🧱 for doing an excellent job installing the block on this project. Quality masonry work like this is a critical part of building a solid foundation—and it shows.

Another important step completed ✔️

Today we completed the footer beam inspection 🧱. This inspection confirms that the excavation, reinforcement, and layout are all correct before any concrete is poured 🏗️. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes steps that most people never see—but it’s critical to the long-term performance of the structure.

A big thank you to UES 👷‍♂️📐 for assisting with the engineering inspection and providing recommendations on the correct course of action for the concrete pier system 🏗️🧱. Their guidance helps ensure the building is properly supported and protected from future settlement.

We take the time to slow down ⏳, verify everything 🔍, and make sure each phase is done right before moving forward. That’s how solid projects are built 💪.

Every build has moments where the ground (literally) reminds us why experience and planning matter.

During excavation on this project, we encountered unexpected soil conditions that required us to dig deeper than originally planned. Rather than guessing or pushing forward blindly, we paused, brought in our geotechnical engineer, and developed a solid plan to move forward the right way.

✔️ Clear communication with the homeowner
✔️ Work continuing with confidence

A big thank you to our concrete partner J.R. Concrete and the entire J.R. Concrete team for their expertise and responsiveness on site. Also, thank you to UES — Brian Cook and Tracy Brewer— for their guidance and engineering support in helping us determine the best path forward.
