We started AF after Thomas, an aerospace engineer by day, banded together with 100s of other 3D printing enthusiasts in early 2020 to print face shields for medical personnel during the PPE shortage. Watching dozens of cars line up at the US Space &
Rocket Center (in our hometown of Huntsville, Alabama) and wait to donate as many units as possible, week after week, we knew this community of makers was our community. But then, Thomas and his maker-friends couldn’t buy more filament to continue printing face shields. The pandemic highlighted how any change in manufacturing or shipping overseas –– or a change in trade relations –– could drastically impact our ability to serve our communities and continue our hobbies. So, we began to learn exactly how 3D printing filament is made and set up shop.
