Help! My Air Conditioner Is Leaking Water!
If you are looking around your air conditioner to see water leaking—or lightly pouring—outside of your unit, you may get slightly concerned. Seeing all this liquid coming out of your unit might send you into a panic. The good news is there are things you can check and maybe even fix yourself so your AC unit is safe and working properly.
Where Is the Water Coming From?
You may be wondering how water even occurred inside your AC unit. This water is condensation that occurs when your air conditioner pulls the humidity from the air. Usually you do not see this condensation as it should be exiting outside your home or into your homes plumbing. When you do see water leaking from your system it is a good idea to check it out.
What to Do When Water is Leaking from Your Air Conditioner
The first thing you should do if you see water coming from your unit or pooling around your unit is to turn your AC unit off. This water could cause problems with the electronic parts inside your air conditioner.
You may be seeing water for many reasons, let’s look at these reasons and what you can do about it.
• Condensate Drain Line Issues. If your condensate drain line is clogged this can cause water to back up and start pouring back around your unit. This can happen due to dirt, bugs, mold and debris. You can use a wet-dry vacuum to help disperse the clog or you can call an expert to have your drain line unclogged. It is a good idea not to stick sharp objects into the drain line to try and get rid of the clog, you may end up doing more damage.
• Drain Pan Issues. If the drain pan is clogged or it has rusted out, this can cause water to flow over and onto the ground. If the drain pan is rusted it will need to be replaced. If the drain pan is clogged, you may be able to clean out the drain pan yourself by removing any build up.
• Evaporator Coil. A dirty evaporator coil can also cause leaks. This can happen when dirt mixes with water and makes its way onto your coil. If you have a dirty coil you will need a professional to help clean the coil. Yearly maintenance can also help prevent this issue.
• Installation Issues. If you have just had a new air conditioning unit installed and it is leaking it may be due to faulty installation. If the condensate trap was not designed or installed correctly there will be drainage problems. This will cause water build up and overflowing water. If this is the case you will need a professional to fix and possibly redesign the condensate trap.
If you start looking at your air conditioner and you can’t see why your system is leaking, switch your system off and call an expert for a repair.

Your air conditioner’s coils are key players in cooling your Huntsville home or business. When they are clean and clear of debris, they can easily absorb heat from inside your home and cast it off outside – when your coils are dirty and caked with grime, they will not function as expected. Below, we’ll tell you more about how your coils work and why it’s important they be kept clean.
How AC coils work
Your air conditioning system has two sets of coils: the indoor evaporator coils and the outdoor condenser coils. Refrigerant flows through the system, from the expansion valve which lowers its pressure, to the evaporator coil. As it moves through the evaporator coil, the refrigerant becomes a gas and absorbs excess heat from the air passing over the coil. Next, the refrigerant is pressurized in the compressor and moves to the condenser coil. The condenser coil transforms the heated refrigerant gas into liquid, allowing it to release heat into the surrounding outdoor air.
Air conditioners cool homes and businesses through heat exchange, rather than creating chilled air. The surface area of each coil is utilized to absorb and release heat. Clean coils allow heat exchange to occur uninhibited, whereas the available surface area of a dirty coil is restricted, so heat exchange cannot occur as effectively or efficiently.
Dirty coil problems
When your system’s coils are dirty, the air conditioner won’t be able to conduct heat exchange properly.
• The system is forced to overwork to exchange heat, consuming excess energy which lowers system efficiency. This places more stress on system components, which can cause breakdowns.
• When the heat exchange process is hindered, your air conditioner may not be able to keep your home or business at the desired temperature.
Keeping coils clean
To prevent dirt and debris from impacting the heat exchange process, your air conditioner coils should be professionally cleaned on a yearly basis. You can help prevent debris and grime from building up on your outdoor condenser coil by trimming away nearby trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.
If your air conditioner coils could use a thorough cleaning, call Riley’s Air Conditioning and Heating today. Our certified technicians will clean your coils completely, taking great care to prevent damage to your air conditioning system. Contact us today to learn more.

SIGNS YOU NEED HEAT PUMP REPAIR IN HUNTSVILLE, TX
Heat pumps are a great way to heat and cool your Texas home; these energy-efficient HVAC systems also offer excellent long-term savings by reducing the amount of energy you require to maintain a comfortable home. Because you can use your heat pump throughout the year for both heating and cooling, it’s important to act on any signals that your home comfort system may need professional attention. As soon as you think you may need heater repair, calling Riley’s Air Conditioning and Heating for an evaluation is the simplest and fastest way to prevent rising utility costs and poor indoor air quality.
Fast or Shortened Cycling
When your heater switches on and off frequently or doesn’t seem to stay on long enough to adequately heat your home, it’s a sign that you need professional heater repair. Heat pumps may cycle too frequently when they are dirty, which causes airflow through the system to suffer and reduces heating efficiency. Alternatively, problems with your thermostat or refrigerant leaks can also cause your heat pump to cycle too frequently, increasing its energy usage—and operating costs—without improving the comfort in your home.
Loud Noises
Banging, screeching, squealing, and rattling are all noises that signal the need for heater repair. Heat pumps have few moving parts, but their mechanical components can still suffer from lost lubrication and wear over time, especially if maintenance checks and tune-ups have been missed. The noises that develop often indicate that parts are loose or grinding together, which negatively impacts heater efficiency and could cause more extensive damage by leading to premature wear and tear on internal components. Your heater repair technician can quickly determine the cause of the noises you’re hearing and address it for quiet, efficient heat pump operation once more.
Increasing Energy Bills
Heat pumps are designed to heat and cool your home with high efficiency, reducing costs while maintaining the comfortable indoor environment you want. When you notice a sharp increase in your heating bills, it’s likely a sign that something is wrong with your heat pump, causing it to operate less efficiently than you expect. The easiest way to determine if your energy bills have increased is to compare each month’s bill with the bill during the same month in previous years. If your costs today are much higher than they were in the past, it’s worth contacting your heating repair expert to determine what could be causing the change in cost.
At Riley’s A/C and Heat, we specialize in air conditioning and heater repair in Huntsville, Texas. Our expert team of HVAC technicians can help you determine the best course of action as soon as you notice a drop in home comfort or efficiency, from maintenance and repairs to system replacement with a newer, more energy-efficient appliance. The Most Important Things you need to know about your Air Conditioner
If you have a conventional air conditioner or you are considering purchasing one for your Huntsville home, there are some important things to know about how these machines work, the operating cost, energy efficiency, cost, size, and maintenance. Conventional air conditioners and conventional central air conditioning are the most popular cooling methods in use today in the U.S.
Huntsville air conditioners work by way of a very complex process with several critical parts which essentially cool the air by pushing it across coils that are cooled with a refrigerant to remove the heat from the air and re-circulate the cooled air back into the home. An evaporator inside the home draws heat from the air. The compressor pressurizes the evaporated fluid and sends it outside to the condenser. The heat is then released to the outside and the fluid is pumped back to the evaporator.
Central air conditioners are rated on the basis of a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The higher the number, the more efficient the unit is and the less it will cost to operate it. Units manufactured before 1992 commonly had a SEER rating of about 6. Standards in 2017, however, require that units have a SEER rating or at least 14. If you are buying a new central air conditioner for your Huntsville home, you should look for a SEER rating of 14 or more, if possible, and the unit should carry the EnergyStar seal.
Many of these new units also have additional energy-saving features, such as the ability to run the fan without activating the air conditioner, a programmable thermostat, adjustable fan speed controls and high efficiency devices. The 2017 cost for a central air conditioning system, including installation will run in the $3,000-9,000 range.
Choosing an air conditioning system of the right size is also important. Many homes today have oversized air conditioning systems. Getting the right size unit will save both initial cost and ongoing operating cost.
There are a number of things you can do to increase the energy efficiency of your conventional central air conditioner:
1. Seal ducts in unused portions of the home.
2. Set your thermostat at 78°F
3. Change disposable filters every month
4. Keep weeds and grass away from the compressor
5. Have the system professionally serviced every year
6. Turn the temperature up or off during peak demand hours of the day
7. Install a programmable thermostat
8. Weatherize your home
With these basic facts, you should be ready to make your existing Huntsville air conditioning system more efficient or to select a high-efficiency new system. If you are trying to achieve maximum efficiency, you should also investigate heat pumps.
