UC Astro Cats

UC Astro Cats The University of Cincinnati Astro Cats is group of seniors in the College of Engineering and Applied Science competing in the NASA USLI competition.

The University of Cincinnati Astro Cats is group of seniors in the College of Engineering and Applied Science competing in the NASA University Student Launch Initiative. The UC Astrocats will be designing and constructing a rocket that reaches an altitude as close to 5280 feet as possible. The rocket will contain a planetary probe that will be deployed via a fairing design. The planetary probe wil

l collect atmospheric data and photos, and transmit the data and photos to the ground control in real time. The data will be plotted to describe the relationship of the data values to altitude and velocity. Not only will the Astro Cats be deisigning building rockets, but we will also be teaching over 200 high school students rocket physics, with hands on design and contruction of water bottle rockets. The information taught will come from NASA documentation on water bottle rockets. We will work with the teachers at the high school to make sure our lesson will relate to what the students have learned in the classroom.

Here is the launch pad video of the Astro Cats' rocket at the NASA . First you will see a close call as another team's rocket almost hit our launch rail on its descent. Next, you will see our rocket kick up a bunch of dirt as it lifts off the pad. It was such an exciting competition and there will be plenty more videos and pictures to come. Big thanks to Bragg Farms and Marshall Space Flight Center for hosting such an incredible event!

Santa Ono, We are a team of Seniors in Spacecraft Design in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Cincinnati, and we are excited to travel to Huntsville Alabama tomorrow, for NASA Student Launch! We have been designing and fabricating a rocket and atmospheric measurement payload since September 2015, and we get to showcase our work this week in front of NASA and all the other competing schools this week. Launch day is Saturday April 16!

The Planetary Investigation Lander (PIL) is coming along great for NASA Student Launch! We finished fabrication last night and are putting the finishing touches on today. This payload will be deployed from the fairing and the pedals will be closed against the side. When it lands, those pedals will spring open (as shown) to allow the PIL to remain upright for data collection on the ground.
