Continuing with International Women’s History Month, we reflect and encourage the power of women past, present, and future, we are highlighting two more Discovery women who continue to push the world of science forward. From pathology to accounting, these women play a vital role in our science community.
This week, say hi to Annette Mühleisen and Mandy Andrade! We asked them what women mentors or experiences inspired or shaped their career in the life sciences space and the advice they would give other women who are interested in pursuing careers in the biotech, life sciences, or research field. Keep reading for their inspiring words!
Annette: The first woman mentor that comes to mind is my mother. She modeled true hard work and taught me to love what I do and lead with compassion. During my studies and time at the German Cancer Research Center, there were few female mentors around me. Still, I believe mentors shape you regardless of gender; it’s up to you what lessons you carry forward. I remind myself why I chose this field: our work helps to improve treatments and besides the daily whirlwind, other things matter even more. Resilience strengthens not only me but also my team. We support one another, and healthy workplaces value strengths and ambition, regardless of gender.
Mandy: Rebecca Parker and Angela Case have played a pivotal role in shaping my career at Discovery. Their mentorship has influenced how I lead, collaborate, and solve problems within our team. While I don’t define my path strictly within biotech or life sciences, the advice I recently shared with my daughter, who graduates in May, is simple: choose work that brings you joy and purpose. A career is often a lifelong journey, so it should feel meaningful. Not everyone follows a traditional route and that’s perfectly fine. Whether you begin as an English major and move into Sales, Marketing, or Accounting, passion and fulfillment matter most.
