Wildfire mitigation works best when it's focused and done in priority order based on risk.

For the 2025 CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit Fire Plan, Vibrant Planet’s risk analytics platform helped the Unit identify strategic wildfire mitigation treatments that could provide the greatest potential benefit.

Here are some key results from this work:

🔎 2 million+ acres evaluated across the Unit boundary, and 116,807 acres identified for high-impact treatments
💡 Modeling suggests these priority areas have the potential to deliver the greatest wildfire risk reduction if treatments are implemented, with up to an 89% reduction in wildfire hazard in targeted areas under modeled conditions.

The 116,807 acres represent a strategic planning footprint, not a commitment to treat every acre. The analysis identifies where future projects could provide the greatest potential benefit, while actual implementation depends on funding, land ownership, environmental review, partner capacity, and long-term maintenance.

The analysis suggests that focusing treatments in a relatively small portion of the 2 million+ acre landscape could capture more than half of the modeled risk-reduction benefit, helping CAL FIRE and its partners prioritize future mitigation work where it has the greatest potential impact.

This strategic, science-based mitigation planning powered by Vibrant Planet, is the future of wildfire prevention in California.

As wildfire insurance crisis pushes high-risk communities to action, The New York Times highlighted efforts in Tyrolian Village, a Lake Tahoe HOA, to measure and reduce that risk.

We’re proud to have provided a data-driven plan that helps Tyrolian Village community members quantify their wildfire risk reduction efforts (fuels mitigation, home hardening) and importantly, unlock affordable insurance for homeowners who previously had no options.

The community’s work is delivering results insurers can’t ignore:
🔥 Fuels mitigation reduced wildfire risk for an estimated 62% of highly exposed homes
💵 It contributed to $113 million in projected avoided losses across the area

Collective action requires credible, localized data to build this level of confidence with insurers. Is your community ready to secure its future?

CAL FIRE and Vibrant Planet have entered into a statewide partnership, transforming fire planning and mitigation for the department, building on successful pilots in its Amador-El Dorado and San Diego Units.

Vibrant Planet’s platform enables the department to expand beyond the traditional metrics of number of projects and/or numbers of acres treated to an "impact of treatment" metric which:
- Prioritizes locations where fuel reduction treatments offer the highest Return on Investment (ROI) for reducing community risk to wildfire.
- Ensures that resources allocated for hazardous fuel reduction treatments are backed by data-driven and scientifically sound decision making along with CAL FIRE expertise and cooperator engagement.

“By integrating Vibrant Planet’s advanced analytics with CAL FIRE expertise, we can focus our efforts where they will have the greatest impact. This shift toward data‑driven, science‑based planning ensures that every dollar invested in fuel reduction is reducing risk, strengthening resilience, and helping us better protect the people and places we serve,” said Chris Ramey, Deputy Chief of CAL FIRE’s Pre-Fire Planning Program.

A new study published in Science found that every $1 invested in wildfire fuel treatments returns $3.75 in avoided damages.

Across nearly 300 fires studied, treatments reduced total burned area by 36% and protected more than 4,000 buildings. And landscape-scale treatments (over 2,400 acres) were the most effective at reducing wildfire spread.

While the science is clear, the challenge now is building the collaborative plans and cross-boundary partnerships to turn that ROI into reality. We're working on this every day with land managers, fire agencies, utilities and communities across the West.

Last week, our machine learning team presented VibrantSR: our newest canopy height model that puts fine-scale forest mapping in reach at an unprecedented cadence, resolution, and scale.

What this looks like in practice:
💥 For communities: Better data on dense fuels, and visibility into projects that will reduce the most risk to homes and infrastructure.
💥 For wildfire and land managers: Treatment assessments and post-fire recovery in a single season.
💥 For utilities: Improved insights such as trees encroaching on lines before they become an ignition source.

Using global imagery from Sentinel-2, VibrantSR unlocks forest monitoring at 0.5-meter resolution – moving us closer to offering high-resolution forest intelligence available to anyone, anywhere.

VibrantSR also pushes the remote sensing community further. And we’re so proud of our team for presenting this work at CVPR, the premier international academic and industry event for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision.
