K9FD's human remains detection dog, HotRod, passed his National Association for Search and Rescue certification for the 5th year in a row today.
HotRod certifies in source amounts less than 15g and greater than 30g in both wilderness and urban search environments. K9FD thanks Calvert K-9 Search Team for organizing.

Very proud of K9FD's Vance today. Today, nearly a year after he was pulled from the Ann Arundel Animal Control Shelter he did his first work towards becoming a detection dog. He worked with the Hare boxes and BSD without odor once to understand what they do so that when we add an odor source in the next few days he's a step ahead.
It's taken a year for him to mature both physically and mentally, but now it's full speed ahead. When not working, Vance likes to snuggle with my wife, his mama Penny.

Meet Cleo... not a detection dog, but a service dog in training for a friend and survivor of 9/11. Although K9FD does not specialize in service dog training, many principles of detection dog training apply to service dogs. Cleo had her first day of access training with K9FD owner and trainer, Jamie Powell. Cleo will receive extensive public access and obedience training in addition to learning specialized behaviors to help her handler

K9FD need our dogs to be comfortable in a variety of settings since we are required to search in a variety of settings. To facilitate this we regularly take our dogs out to public areas and train obedience, agility, detection, and to just chill. Last Friday, K9FD Seminal Fluid detection dog in training, Vance, accompanied his trainer to run errands around the Annapolis Naval Academy and town. Vance was pulled from Ann Arundel County Animal Control 8 months ago, and we look forward to him being able to give back to the community that saved his life as a resource for law enforcement in r**e, sexual abuse, and other criminal cases where seminal fluid may be found. Although a number of European countries have dogs trained for this purpose, we believe Vance will be the first in the USA!

HotRod and I were honored to meet these veterans at Ronald Reagan Airport on our arrival home. They were waiting for the arrival of an Honor Flight to sing to celebrate their arrival. Upon hearing my wife is active duty Navy they serenaded Hotty and I with a beautiful rendition of "Let me call you sweetheart" (one of my favorite songs). Thank you gentlemen for your service. Honor Flight is an amazing organization that arranges trips for veterans to visit DC and the memorials. They partner with Southwest Airlines to do this which is HotRod's favorite airline for their respect of working dogs. If you can spare a dollar, please consider donating to Honor Flight Network

Packing to head back home from Ohio. K9FD's HotRod did very well at this seminar. We were able to confirm that some training issues had been resolved and discovered a few more things to work on next (as should happen at any seminar). HotRod received a number of compliments on his commitment to source odor, drive, and work ethic. His handler learned lots of new skills to bring back and apply to HotRod and our other working dogs. Many thanks to HRD Specialized K-9 Training Est. 2002 for running an excellent seminar with great training aids including whole sets of human remains as well as large and small sources, knowledgeable instructors, and a fantastic problem solving attitude. We look forward to bringing more K9FD dogs to your seminars in the future

Some of our training locations at this seminar are not permitting photographs. But K9FD Human Remains Detection dog HotRod is thoroughly enjoying the work.
As his handler I am learning so much not only from working him, but also watching the other dogs participating

K9 Forensic Detection is a Maryland small business dedicated to providing Law Enforcement with specialized detection dogs.
There are many excellent trainers of narcotics and explosives detection dogs around the world producing quality dogs. Because of our Owner/Trainer's unique background in Anthropology, Forensic Science, Search and Rescue, and Disaster Management, we focus on training dogs to detect unique odors not commonly trained for. We currently have Human Remain Detection Dogs certified and in training, and are working on some novel odor detection projects. If you would like to learn more or have an idea for a novel odor you would like a dog to detect please contact us to discuss.
