Research from the Kai Hwang lab in University of Iowa Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences demonstrates how the frontoparietal cortex handles uncertainty in decision-making and organizes and coordinates responses in the brain and body. Did you know the Iowa Neuroscience Institute includes faculty from 8 colleges and 30 departments across the University of Iowa? That includes Abbey Dvorak from the University of Iowa School of Music, who received our Williams-Cannon Fellowship last year and leads a team that was recently awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Research Lab Award of nearly $200,000 to investigate the effects of therapeutic group singing, develop clinician training resources, and create freely accessible online materials for individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease. Congratulations to our colleagues who received $600,000 to support the Iowa Program in Experimental Neurotherapeutics (IPEN), an interdisciplinary group led by Ted Abel and Aliasger Salem that will integrate molecular, pharmacological, and circuit-based approaches to treat neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. With collaborators from three colleges and seven departments, the team is unique in combining deep clinical exposure to brain disorders such as autism spectrum disorders and Parkinson’s disease with leading scientists and engineers. This multidisciplinary approach– from molecules to circuits, spanning chemistry to bioengineering– will identify highly effective intervention strategies for brain disease. Collaborators include: Chris Ahern, Soura Dasgupta, Kumar Narayanan, Stefan Strack, Joshua Weiner and Aislinn Williams.
