⚠️ This Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, there's an urgent message worth sharing with everyone you love:
Colorectal cancer is now the #1 cause of cancer deaths in adults under 50 — and according to Dr. Neil Parikh, Chief of Gastroenterology at Hartford Hospitals, it is "completely preventable."
In a recent Healio interview (source: https://loom.ly/xLwZmXk) Dr. Parikh broke down what's behind the alarming rise in younger patients: ultra-processed foods loaded with nitrates and preservatives, sedentary lifestyles, obesity, heavy alcohol use, and even emerging research pointing to microplastics as a potential contributor.
But here's the most important message: a colonoscopy doesn't just find cancer — it stops it before it starts. By removing precancerous polyps, you can change the entire trajectory of the disease.
Dr. Parikh also stressed that younger adults need to stop dismissing symptoms. Blood in the stool or persistent changes in bowel habits are not something to chalk up to hemorrhoids or food poisoning. If it's persistent, see a gastroenterologist.
Screening is now recommended starting at age 45. If you're approaching that age — or have a family history or symptoms — please don't wait.
The death of actor James Van Der Beek, diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer at 46, is a heartbreaking reminder of what's at stake when warning signs go unaddressed.
