"Nanoscience is for Everyone!" For Rachel Miller, the path from aspiring astronaut to nanoscience researcher has been a long and winding road. From her childhood in Los Angeles to completing her Ph.D. at Cornell University in June 2023 (research performed in part at the CNF). Miller says, "I would like to teach science and engineering not just as part of a curriculum, but also as a lens to find solutions to problems..." Link to full article in the comments!

Waveguides! Gallium! Explosive Lycopodium! Pennell!

Nanoday 2023 was a riot!

The Cornell NanoScale Facility partnered with our great friends at the Micron Foundation and the Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) to give the 5th graders at Millard Fillmore Elementary School a fun look at the world of nanotechnology!

We explored nanorobotics, photonics, materials science and micro particles in a fun and interactive one hour demo session. My favorite part was the “is it science or is it magic” part where I blew the audience’s mind with a gallium spoon and shape memory alloy wire!

CNF also provided four nano experiments for the kids to do in class along with Nanooze magazines for the school library. The Micron Foundation and MoST put the icing on the cake by giving every 5th grade student and the educators at the school a free pass to visit the new Micron “Deconstructed” exhibit at the MoST in Syracuse, NY!

Our sincere thanks go out to our partners for helping us give these kids an amazing experience!

The CNF family mourns the passing of Prof. Ed Wolf, first director for the National Research and Resource Facility for Submicron Structures (NRRFSS) at Cornell, which later became CNF. Ed was a long time supporter of CNF and Cornell and a great friend. His leadership 45 years ago set CNF on the path to where we are today.

Edward Dean Wolf, a pioneer in nanofabrication who joined Cornell in 1978 as the first director of what would become the Cornell Nanoscale Science and Technology Facility, died March 11 in Ithaca. He was 87.
