The white object you see in the center of this photo is a water tower on the ground in MS due to last night’s tornado. It appears that the anchor bolts to the foundation failed as well as the single (huge) steel support right above the flared base. The spherical tank that held the water is completely split in half (right end). That entire structure is steel plate. The foundation is still in the ground and intact. I’ve never seen anything like this before, and you know CWA designs stuff like this for a living. That’s crazy!

Congratulations to Daniel Kennedy on completing his Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Structural) from The Citadel. This is no small feat for a family man who has a wife, children, and a full time job with a steady stream of projects to complete. Good job my man. You got it done! 😎😎

CWA is pleased to announce that we have been selected to provide the Civil and Structural Engineering services for the new Pope Replacement School in Jackson, TN. This is a coveted project for us, because one of us is a products of the JMCSS. Thanks to all the great JMCSS and other teachers that helped pave the way for us to pursue our career dreams. We look forward to working with Orcutt-Winslow out of Nashville, TN, Henson Construction Services of Jackson, and the JMCSS. Thanks to all three for having the confidence in us to provide these services for Madison County’s next new school.

Our cover photo says it all. Happy Independence Day to all of our friends and clients!

Clay Williams and Associates, Inc. Is currently working on 2 projects at Nucor’s Steel mill in Crawfordsville, IN. Caster #1 is in need of repairs due to years of deterioration from high temperatures and the water used to cool the steel casting process. We will provide the structural engineering services to make that project a reality using cutting edge concrete marerial technology. The other project consists of installing precast, reinforced concrete panel walls with steel rod ties in an existing building. The new walls will hold back 20’ of slag material in order to streamline their scrap unloading process and further improve their efficiency.

Did u know? Every point on the Modified Mercalli Magnitude Scale (what we use to measure earthquakes in the US) is by a factor of TEN. What that means is this: The 7.1 Magnitude EQ in Cali this am was 8 TIMES as powerful than the previous 6.3 EQ. That also means that an 8.0 EQ is 10,000 times more powerful than a 4.0 EQ.

EQ intensity is more a measure of energy released than actual ground motion. Ground motion (what causes actual damage) is dependent on several things including soil type, the frequency and type of waves released by the EQ, and of course the amount of energy it releases as the earth slips. Just FYI, we have a bowl of jello under us here in West TN while Cali has mostly rock (Rock is the best thing to absorb EQ energy before it reaches ground level... jello not so much! 😳)

Why no major damage or injuries reported in Cali like u might think? That’s because structural engineers learned a HUGE amount about how certain structural systems perform from the catastrophic 1994 Northridge EQ. Hence, building codes have been changed significantly over the past 20 years, and structural engineers have learned how to design structures to save lives as well as how to do it somewhat economically. It’s just a fact that structural engineers saved tons of lives in Cali the past few days by being on top of their game.

Another Fact: We are due for an EQ that large in the West TN area sometime in our or our kids lifetime. Major cycles happen every 200-300 years on the New Madrid Fault. The last major ones occurred in 1811-1812... over 200 years ago. ... and the MS River ran backwards for 3 days. No joke. That’s how Reelfoot Lake was formed. Be ready!

Here is a multi-story Reinforced Concrete building swaying during the recent Philippines Earthquake. This is what CWA designs for every single day here in West TN being so close to the New Madrid Fault. Ductility (the ability to move and absorb energy without failure) is the key for life-safety performance of a structure during an earthquake. Call us for all of your Commercial Project Structural and Civil Engineering needs.

CWA has logged in 33 new Civil and Structural Engineering projects since January 1 of this year. It's only the end of February. This economy continues at an unprecedented level!
