“It's a pretty special thing that my job can be not only my career but also my creative outlet and community connection all in one.” Katie Howerton, Communications Manager for the CO & Editor-in-Chief of Our Jackson Home, reflects on how her job overflows into her love of Jackson. “Whether my days are filled with the everyday stuff of running a business, or the more fun activities of screen printing, laying out the journal, or operating a special event, I feel a sense of vocation and purpose in my place in Jackson.”

Katie Howerton moved to Jackson seven years ago in order to study graphic design at Union University. After graduating, she decided to stay here and use her talents to showcase the people, places, and happenings in Jackson.

In 2014, Our Jackson Home was originally launched as a blog and podcast side hustle. Katie fell in love with the concept and proposed using the brand as the blueprint for a print publication as her senior thesis project. She says, “Little did I know that it would lead me to my post-grad career. I'm so grateful that theCO provided a way to sustain Our Jackson Home and take it far beyond a hobby for local creatives.”

Katie says, “I love that Our Jackson Home allows me to be such a part of downtown. While my office is not there, most of my days are spent eating in, highlighting, and meeting folks in downtown, primarily because it is the heart of our city—perhaps not geographically, but definitely historically. It's home to my favorite restaurants, church body, and overall community.”

As she reflects on Our Jackson Home and their team, Katie says, “I'm hopeful that the creativity and authenticity of our team translates to our audience so that they can feel connected to their city and encouraged to know their neighbors.”

By utilizing a Main Street Entrepreneur Grant, the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation (JDDC) developed an idea to fulfill a need that is often seen as a hurdle to entrepreneurs: finding an affordable storefront. With strong community support in the form of donations of materials, labor and funding, JDDC was able to build three pods that are used as rental storefronts by area entrepreneurs. An idea that began on the back of a napkin has now developed into theLOCAL.

“The creative spirit is alive and well in Jackson and entrepreneurs need an opportunity like this. This project would have been unthinkable without the support we’ve received at every level, from local industry and government all the way up to the state government. The project has flowered from a conceptual dream to a sketch on a napkin and then to a skeleton which now has flesh on it.” – Matt Altobell, Executive Director of the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation

”The landscape of downtown and midtown changes on a daily basis. I enjoy walking the area between the downtown core and the University of Memphis - Lambuth Campus and seeing what improvements are being made.” Chris Alexander shares, “I remember not too long ago that after 5 o'clock during the week and on weekends that folks rarely ventured downtown. Now downtown is the talk of the town. There is a lot of activity going on day or night - every day of the week.”

Chris moved to Jackson in 1995 to buy into and manage the Blockbuster Video franchise. He had a great run of 17 years in the business. As he was closing the last of his three locations in Jackson, an opportunity became available to work with Henry Turley and Hal Crocker on the Jackson Walk development.

Henry Turley has been a business partner and mentor of Chris for over 20 years with Blockbuster and Moe's Southwest Grill. Having grown up in Memphis, Chris always admired how Henry revitalized downtown Memphis with his vision for South Bluffs and Harbor Town in the early 90's. Chris was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of such a great team working to breathe new life into Jackson.

According to Chris, “I love being a part of the revitalization happening in the heart of our city. I enjoy recruiting businesses to the area that I believe will benefit all residents … In addition, it's rewarding to be a part of the improvements being made in the LANA neighborhood. We've helped with over 30 new homes being built and numerous renovations ... We've been able to work with numerous community partners to add quality of life improvements for all residents of Jackson and West Tennessee to enjoy.”

Two of Chris’ primary businesses that he works with (Healthy Community, LLC and HCB Development, Jackson TN) are centered in the downtown and midtown/LANA area. He enjoys having a short five minute commute to his office. Chris says, “It's a plus, too, that there are over a dozen great lunch options within walking distance in the downtown core. Downtown also offers a sense of community that I don't get in other areas of the city.”

Chris is especially proud of Jackson's AMP at the Market and the LANA Dog Park at Jackson Walk. He loves how these new amenities draw people from all across Jackson and West Tennessee to come socialize and see the amazing things happening downtown.
