Revolutionize Your Process with BCR's Screw Type Heat Exchangers

Recycling is not only limited to residential waste, but it also involves many industrial processes that aim to recover valuable resources. BCR's screw-type heat exchangers are used worldwide in a variety of recycling and resource recovery applications. Our vast experience in designing screw heat exchangers for never-before-handled or difficult-to-handle products is unparalleled in the Screw Conveyor industry.

One example of our custom equipment design involves volatilizing sodium from a metal and chemical waste compound. The paste-like consistency and extreme toxicity of the compound made a twin rotor screw conveyor the best option. Volatizing sodium comes with inherent issues, requiring the process to be done at temperatures exceeding 1,000°F and in a 50 milli torr vacuum. For this application, we manufactured a twin-screw heat exchanger utilizing our exclusive "Electro-Scru" technology and a tubular design. The product exceeded the process conditions required and was able to meet the stringent criteria.

Study Shows Neutralizer® Biosolids Have Very Low Water Extractable Phosphorus (WEP) Content

Dewatered samples were collected from four different facilities to compare the characteristics of different biosolids disinfection processes. Samples were sent to Penn State Laboratory for analysis. Each sample was tested for total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, and water-extractible P (WEP). The WEP test measures the portion of Phosphorus that is water-soluble and therefore measures the potential risk for water contamination via runoff.

The five facilities tested were Mid Clay (Neutralizer®), TMWRF (anaerobic digestion), Wisconsin Dells (aerobic digestion), and Baraboo (lime stabilization).

The table summarizes the results of the testing. With a WEP of only 81 mg/kg dry-weight solids, Neutralizer® biosolids have significantly less phosphorus runoff potential compared to digestion and lime stabilization, making it a great slow-release fertilizer, significantly reducing the risk for contaminating waterways.

The Neutralizer® is a two-stage chemical treatment system. Untreated biosolids, usually consisting of Waste Activated Sludge (WAS), travel through the Neutralizer® system where they are treated by a patented chemical injection system. The processing time is eight hours and the final product is a t...

BCR Lowers Interior Footprint Requirements of Neutralizer® by >30%

BCR now offers its Class A biosolids Neutralizer® system with a footprint under 2,000 square feet of interior space. This reduced footprint has been accomplished by improving modular components, equipment placement, and providing for outdoor chemical storage with heat tracing capability.

Further, if electing to have the space conditioned, in addition to saving footprint, BCR has reduced the required overhead clearance of the equipment under the roof by 25%, meaning over 50% reduction in cubic volume. Lower conditioned volume downsizes operating expense and mechanical ventilation size.

These improvements provide a significant reduction in capital requirements and/or installation flexibility to allow the modular system to be installed into an existing building.

Whether you want to upgrade your facility to produce Class A residuals or improve your current biosolids processing, BCR can help evaluate your space constraints and provide a fit for you.

BIO-SCRU® IMPROVEMENT NEWS...
Sight glass for the Bio-Scru® Dryer… we have listened to our customers…

The sight glass can be found on the Bio-Scru dryer at the feed, middle, and discharge with an isolation gate valve to isolate. It is used to provide visual inspection of the material in the dryer (wet, plastic, or granular). The issue our customers were experiencing was that the steam along with dust would accumulate on the sight glass due to cooling at the glass which caused the customer to remove, clean, and reinstall each sight glass, this occurred once a month or so.

BCR has developed the nitrogen purge sight glass to prevent steam & dust reaching the sight glass and also includes a mechanical wiper. BCR customers appreciate a lot less downtime for sight glass cleaning, and it provides better visual view of the material in the dryer.

Last month the BCR Bio-Scru® mobile dryer was deployed at an industrial customer site for drying wet shredded material for recycling. The shredded material included pieces of plastic, metals like copper and aluminum, and metal salts that can generate acid gases upon thermal heating.

The BCR pilot team had to be in Tyvek suits to avoid skin contact with acid gases and a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) to avoid inhaling the acid gases.

The Bio-Scru® was able to dry the shredded material with 70% moisture to less than 5% moisture content product at low thermal oil (heating medium) temperature (200 to 250°F).

Another successful Industrial pilot test in the books!!

CleanB® Significantly Reduced Centrate and Effluent Concentrations at Marengo WWTF

The previous two-phase anaerobic digestion (TPAD) process solubilized nutrients and created high amounts of ammonia as a by-product, resulting in a centrate loaded with nutrients and ammonia. With just 10 minutes of contact time and without affecting the thermal-physical properties of the sludge, CleanB® allows for high capture rates of nutrients and does not produce ammonia as a by-product. Shown below are centrate concentrations from the new CleanB process compared to the previous TPAD process at Marengo WWTF:

The CleanB® installation resulted in a centrate reductions of 99+% in ammonia, 72% in total phosphorus, and 73+% in total nitrogen (note: total nitrogen concentration of TPAD centrate exceeded detection limits). These significant reductions in centrate concentrations have ultimately resulted in lower effluent concentrations, whereas the nitrogen effluent concentrations from the TPAD process often caused the facility to exceed nitrogen limits.

These improvements from CleanB® not only provide the City with an effluent that can consistently meet and exceed permit limits but also aid in protecting local waterways such as the Kishwaukee River – where the effluent is discharged. Additionally, since commissioning in 2022, the CleanB has greatly increased operational efficiency, lowered operational costs, and provided greater throughput with reduced repair and maintenance.
