For generations, Debs was more than a neighborhood grocery store.

It was where families shopped, neighbors caught up with one another, and lifelong relationships were built. During difficult times, the Debs family even extended credit to customers and cashed paychecks, making the store a trusted cornerstone of Jacksonville’s Historic Eastside.

When the store closed in 2011 after the passing of Joe Debs’ father, the Eastside lost more than a place to buy groceries—it lost a community gathering place.

Joe Debs made it his personal mission to ensure that legacy would continue. A retired engineer and former RS&H executive, he spent years bringing together community leaders and partners to reimagine what this historic landmark could become for future generations.

Today, The Corner at Debs Store is once again serving the community with fresh food, workforce development, financial resources, and opportunities that extend far beyond the grocery aisles.

Baker Design Build is deeply honored to have been part of preserving Joe Debs’ remarkable vision and legacy.

We’re excited to introduce Parker Hemingway, a marketing major at the University of North Florida (UNF Class of '27) spending his summer interning with us at Baker Design Build!

Guided by the motto his father taught him—“Don’t wait for your ship to come to you… swim out to it!”—Parker brings a proactive, ambitious mindset to our team.

He is gaining valuable hands-on experience this summer by helping us reconfigure our marketing and bid search processes, as well as redesigning templates for our RFPs and RFQs.

Outside of the office, Parker enjoys golfing, gaming, and singing his heart out at local karaoke spots.

🌿 Some of Jacksonville’s most beautiful places begin long before the first trail is ever walked.

The Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a place where nature, education, and community come together—and we’re proud to have played a part in bringing that vision to life.

Baker Design Build provided civil engineering services for this unique project, supporting everything from site planning and grading to drainage, utility coordination, and environmental collaboration. Every decision was made with the goal of creating a space that feels both natural and sustainable.

Whether you’re exploring the trails, enjoying the scenery, or simply taking a moment to unplug, it’s rewarding to know our work helped create a place for the community to enjoy for years to come.

✈️ Here’s something you may not know about airport construction…

Most people think construction starts when the building starts taking shape.

In reality, that’s just the part you can see.

Long before steel is erected, crews are underground relocating existing utilities, installing new stormwater and utility systems, grading the site, and preparing the building pad that supports everything above it.

For the Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) Concourse B Expansion, Baker Design Build provided the civil and site utility work that helped prepare the site for future construction.

Because the project was completed within an active airport, every phase required careful planning and coordination to minimize disruptions while keeping progress on schedule.

The next time you travel through an airport, take a moment to think about everything below the surface that’s working just as hard as everything above it.

We are proud to introduce the newest addition to our team for the summer: our Accounting Intern, Kylee Soots!

Kylee is currently pursuing her degree at University of North Florida (Class of 2027). She connected with us at the UNF career fair, where she felt drawn to our company values and our mission of supporting small businesses.

Kylee is spending her summer gaining hands-on experience in accounting software and professional communications. She has jumped right into the action, particularly enjoying the process of reconciling accounts.

When she isn’t working hard at the office, you can find Kylee at the gym, working on arts and crafts, or watching The Boys. We are excited to support her on her path toward becoming a CPA!
