Solar prices are going up
The cost of solar has soared 18% in the last year, for an industry that had experienced dramatic price declines over the last decade that have enabled it to compete with fossil-fuel-fired projects. After years of consistent decreses in prices the cost of solar is now going up. There are a few factors as to the rise in cost. Inflation is at the top of the list. U.S. inflation surged to a new in March from the same month a year ago, driven by , supply constraints and strong consumer demand. Many states have seen inflation rates over 10%.

Solar sales are still up dispite the increse in cost mainly because the cost of energy has increase even more. Energy costs have incresed 11% in less than 2 years. Most experts say that trend will continue for a while.

With energy costs exploding and with solar costs increasing and with incentives decreasing, now is the best time to go solar. The tax credit drops from 26% this year to 22% next year. The cost of solar will also be higher next year than it is now. There is also no guarentee that the utilty companies that are offering good net mertering program will still be available. Take a look today at what solar can do for you. Here comes the sun, is it making you money?

Net Metering Will Not Be Around Forever

Net metering is a vital part of energy independence. Net metering allows solar customers to produce a whole days worth of power while the sun is accessable. The over production is backfeed and stored on the grid with the customers getting full value of the excess. Many cooperative utilty compnaies take an “avoided cost” on the excess which can be a third of the value that is being charged. Duke and some cooperatives have strong net metering programs but that doesnt mean they will have those programs forever. Like the federal tax credit, net metering will not be around forever. Those who enter into a net metering agreement with a utilty compnay will be grandfathered into their agreement. Duke Energy has filings with the NCUC for energy changes to the economics of solar in North Carolina. Below is a list of those changes.

∞ A 2017 law plainly states that the NCUC must study the costs and benefits of net metering prior to any rules change. Duke opposes such a study, and excludes solar benefits in its internal analysis. Attorney General Josh Stein has called for a delay in the proceeding until independent cost-benefit and climate impact analyses are completed. Multiple studies show that net metering is a benefit for non-solar customers.

∞ Duke Energy’s own, newly exposed data show company officials knew their plan would cut value to countless homes adding solar panels by a market-choking 30 percent. Solar installers calculate a 25-35% drop for their average customers.

∞ The Duke plan would cause solar customers to pay the highest rates for grid power exactly when the sun is going down and little solar power is being generated (6-9 pm in summer) – despite Duke’s own 2021 pilot study that was successful with an on-peak window of 2-8pm.

∞ Duke’s changes would penalize all potential solar customers, particularly those on low and fixed incomes. Duke says it will devise a plan for low-income customers at some unspecified future time. The justice groups reject that as a hollow pledge, and propose a system-wide, on-bill financing program like the one in Hawaii that would share solar benefits equitably between all electricity customers, help slow the climate crisis and protect power bills.

∞ Duke plans to impose extravagant minimum bills upon solar customers – without providing justification and while ignoring the fact that more rooftop solar would displace much of the billions Duke wants to spend on grid upgrades.

Now is the time to invest in solar. The tax credit drops from 26% to 22% next year and then expires. Duke is pushing to change their future net metering program. In additon, energy costs are up 11% in less than 2 years with no end in sight. Take a few mins and see what solar can do for you. Keep in mind, you are going to spend the money, it is unavoidable. The real question is what is your situation after you spend the money. We have great prices and many finacing options which are no money down and rates at .99%. Our average customer save over $75,000 over the course of the warranty and three times that amount over the shelf life. Get your free no pressure solar evalution today.

What you need to know about solar
Solar has been around for a long time, however most people do not know much about what solar can and can not do. Where solar is a viable option for many, it is not a good fit for all. Solar is usally grid tied and will not work when the grid is down with backup storage. There is new technology that allows access to solar production without storage. Its new and a little expensive but it is a great benefit. Some utility companies will buy your excess energy but Duke will not.

Net metering allows solar owner an opportunty to all but eleminate all their usage. You will still have to pay for a basic service charge which may range from $14-$39 per month. Net metering allows solar owners to produce a whole days worth of power even though the system only produces 4-6 hours a day. Systems typically overproduce during the sunny hours. Energy that is not used is backfeed and stored on the grid. Once the solar doesn’t produce enought energy you simply use your excess power. With net metering you will get a dollar for dollar exchange or a kwh for kwh exchange. This allows you to offset most if not all of your usage. Any excess is rolled over day by day and month by month and accumulates and rolls. When usage exceeds production you will use the excess then purchase any addition usage from the grid. Being grid tied allows 2 sources of power to enter the home. You will never go without power unless the grid is down. Many cooportives offer solar use but do not offer true net metering. Where the excess is backfeed and stored, the co op with take an avoided cost which is usally less than half the value of what the utilty is charging. For example, the utilty may charge .11 per kwh and after the avoided cost they may pay you .04 per kwh. Solar may still be a good option and is worth checking the numbers by a professional. Some utilites also have a true up date where they clear your total excess. Some purchase the excess but Duke does not.

Shading is usally the biggest hindrance to solar. South facing roofs get the most sun daily but East and West facing roofs work fine. East facing roof would need to start getting good sun by 7:30-8:00 where West facing roof will need good sun until 6:00-7:00 most month. South facing roof need to start getting good sun around 9:00-10:00 and produce till 5:00-6:00. The bulk of solar production is only about 4 hours a day. North facing roofs get great production during the summer but the other 9 months the production is not good. The sun eventually drops 30 degrees in the sky and the sun swings acroos the south instead of over the top of the house. North facing solar panels produce about 40% less than South facing. Many people think they have to much shade where in realty they do not. A solar professional can help with determing how much shade a home has. Google project roof is a great tool to see how much good sunlihht your home gets.

If your utility company offers net metering and you do not have shade issues than solar will work. Roof space and accessibly will determine how much solar you can have. It only takes a few mins to see what solar can and can not do for you. Net metering may not be available forever so taking advantage of it while it is can save you thousands. We at Wilmington Solar are happy to offer a free solar evaluation. Fill out a request form tody and see what solar can do for you.
