Here’s an example of an air filter that is too dirty. This one should have been changed at least a couple of months ago. Dirty filters make your air conditioner work harder than it should. It can even cause the evaporator coil to freeze and stop your air conditioner from working.

Changing your filters is a must to keep your system running properly and I'll have a blog post soon to discuss this in detail. In the meantime here are two quick tips:
1. Write the date you changed the filter right on the filter frame. Looking at the filter is your best indication that it needs to be changed but the date will help.
2. Set the thermostat fan to "On" from "Auto". this will create a slight vacuum that will hold the filter in place when you close the cover. This is especially help when the filter is overhead like this one. Don't forget to switch the thermostat back to "auto" when you're done.
