U.S. power demand is rising faster than it has in decades, and a fuel that could help meet it is sitting in storage, counted as waste.

Used nuclear fuel still holds the vast majority of its original energy. The chemistry to recover it is well established. The commercial infrastructure is less so: a facility that can be licensed, safeguarded, tracked and operated economically.

That's the gap our ARPA-E CURIE work with EPRI, GE Vernova, Argonne National Laboratory and Case Western Reserve is built to close.

We've joined Prometheus, one of the first Phase II awards under the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission — a $60 million national effort to bring AI to nuclear energy.

Led by Idaho National Laboratory, Prometheus unites the national labs and industry to speed how advanced reactors are designed, licensed, and built.
This is the second front of our work under the — putting AI to work on the full nuclear fuel cycle.

We're building a stronger American nuclear future, together with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Idaho National Laboratory.

We recently toured the future home of the Children's Museum of Rock County in downtown Janesville.

Opening this fall, the museum will feature interactive exhibits built around three themes tied to our region: agriculture, the Rock River, and innovation.

We're helping shape the innovation area, where kids and families will get hands-on with fusion technology through exhibits designed to spark curiosity about science and energy. It's a chance to be part of something that'll shape how the next generation thinks about what's possible.

SHINE and newcleo announced an agreement today to explore how our technologies could work together to close the nuclear fuel cycle. We're assessing how we could supply newcleo with recovered materials to manufacture MOX fuel — and how we could recycle spent fuel from newcleo's advanced reactors in return.

We’re developing reprocessing technologies to pull uranium and plutonium from the 90,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel sitting in the US.

newcleo is building MOX fuel manufacturing and lead-cooled fast reactors designed to run on exactly that material.

Put those together and you get a closed fuel cycle — less waste, lower long-term storage costs, and a domestic fuel supply for the next generation of reactors.

Our CTO Ross Radel spoke at the President's Special Session of the prestigious American Nuclear Society Annual Conference this week. He also joined the panel "How Nuclear Technologies Will Shape the Future Energy Economy" and presented multiple papers on used nuclear fuel recycling, fusion materials testing, and fission-fusion hybrid systems at scale.

What to do with used nuclear fuel is one of the more complex challenges in nuclear energy. We're working to change that. Our approach builds the technical and economic case for a closed nuclear fuel cycle.

Wisconsin has been building toward a leadership role in fusion energy longer than many realize. UW-Madison's nuclear program has trained the people doing this work, and we've grown out of that same ecosystem.

Earlier this month, that foundation was on full display at the Great Lakes Fusion Energy Summit in Madison. Our CTO Ross Radel was a keynote panelist, joining Governor Evers, researchers, policymakers, and fusion companies from across the region to talk about how nuclear can meet growing energy demand.
