Totally rained out in the Jerome/Twin Falls area but surprisingly enough, it’s dry in Malta. Playing a game of dodgeball, dodging the storms, fingers crossed. There are a lot of black clouds me in all directions and the forecast is for rain at 1:00, we’ll see.

Doing something new this year. A customer from last year, who we strip tilled for following his triticale crop, was so impressed with how his field took water. It resulted in the ability to slow down the pivot, putting on more water per rev with no run off. Less revs for the season equal less cooling cycles of the soil. He asked us to strip till again this year in bare ground. He disked his corn stalks last fall, prewatered this spring and as soon as it was dry enough, we started strip tilling and planting. Anxious to see how it works this year.

Strip tilling this field, the planter is not far behind me. It’s a limited tillage method, keeping some of the trash on top and preventing soil erosion from the wind by not over working the ground and making the soil too fine. This is a heavy implement, at least 17K lbs, not sure if you can see the front of the tractor going up and down as the suspension compresses and extends as I raise and lower it. The strips are 30” apart, same row space as the planter. The tilled strips of ground are 8-10” wide and the loose soil goes 10-12” deep making a very nice seed bed.
30 feet wide running 6mph in none rocky fields yields (unfortunately, this one is rocky) give me about 20 acres per hour.

I can’t say that I really see much difference between this year and last year. I must have always practiced social distancing and didn’t know. It was always called work, with a little solitude mixed in.
