As the colder months approach, it’s time to prep your home for winter—and that includes taking care of your outdoor garden hoses. A simple task like unhooking and draining your hoses can save you from costly damage down the road. Here’s why it’s so important and how to do it right.
Why Should You Unhook and Drain Your Hoses?
When garden hoses are left connected during freezing temperatures, water trapped inside can freeze, expand, and cause the hose to crack. Worse yet, the frozen water can back up into your outdoor faucet and pipes, potentially leading to a burst pipe or other plumbing issues.

How to Properly Unhook and Drain Your Hoses
1. Turn Off the Water faucet.
2. Disconnect the Hose: Unscrew the hose from the faucet and gently shake out any remaining water.
3. Drain Completely: Stretch the hose out and elevate one end to let all the water run out.
4. Store Indoors: Coil your hose neatly and store it in a garage, shed, or basement to keep it safe from freezing temperatures.
Once your hose is removed, check your outdoor faucet for leaks and ensure it’s fully turned off.
