Founded in 1995, Pacific Biodiesel is Hawaii's award-winning and internationally recognized producer of renewable fuels and the only commercial producer of liquid biofuels in the state. This Maui-based company established and operated the very first retail biodiesel pump in America and for the past two decades has built a solid reputation as a leading pioneer in the renewable energy industry. Throughout its history, Pacific Biodiesel's mission has remained constant: to promote a clean, sustainable energy future through the community-based production of renewable fuels. Today, with more than 80 employees statewide, Pacific Biodiesel excels in constructing and operating biodiesel processing plants, advancing process technology, and producing and marketing quality fuels. The company is also involved in many sustainable agriculture-related projects - including testing sunflowers in Hawaii as a potential year-round feedstock for producing biodiesel and exploring innovative ways to turn agriculture waste into useful products that can create new revenue streams for farmers, such as recycling waste papaya to grow algae for use as local aquaculture and livestock feed. With a nameplate production capacity of 5.5 million gallons annually, Pacific Biodiesel's Big Island plant utilizes state-of-the art distillation technology to produce the highest-quality biodiesel in the country. On Earth Day 2016, this refinery became the first biodiesel facility in the world to earn certification by the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance for showcasing sustainable biodiesel production and distribution practices.

Fuel prices affect more than what we pay at the pump.

For Hawaiʻi’s farmers and ranchers, the cost of fuel impacts everything from operating equipment and transporting livestock to producing and delivering food to our communities.

This National Farmers Day, we’re highlighting the important connection between energy costs, agriculture and local food security.

In this video clip from Hawaiʻi Energy Conference, Pacific Biodiesel co-founder Bob King expands upon this issue and discusses the difference locally produced biodiesel can make.

Pacific Biodiesel and our sister business, , are proud to be part of today’s Sierra Club Maui 50th anniversary celebration in Haʻikū!

Our co-founder and vice-president Kelly King helped present Sierra Club’s Ho’okaulike Award to Attorneys Lance Collins and Bianca Isaki, one of a number of awards given out at the event. Also in the 1st photo is Lucienne De Naie, Chairperson of Sierra Club Maui Group Executive Committee.

This year’s Made in Hawai’i Festival was truly a team effort to help our sister company, Kuleana Hawaiʻi Grown Oils , shine for its debut at this exciting event.

From the marketing staff on Maui and our mill team on Kauaʻi, to the Oʻahu employees who helped get product to the convention center and staff the event, everyone pulled together to ensure our success at this annual event.

Shoutout and huge mahalo to Ron Maganis and Fred Ancho from the Pacific Biodiesel Oʻahu Plant for their major assistance with moving the Kuleana Hawai'i Grown culinary oils into the convention center to sell at the MIHF! With all the chaos of that show, their help was critical and a major difference maker in our efforts to present this oil and have a successful weekend. Manufacturing Day is all about opening doors to the next generation! ⚙️🌱

Celebrated nationally on the first Friday in October, MFG Day encourages manufacturers across the country to bring students, educators and community members into their facilities for tours, hands-on experiences and conversations that offer a firsthand look at modern manufacturing and the career opportunities it creates.

As the only commercial producer of biodiesel in Hawai’i for the past 31 years, Pacific Biodiesel is proud to be part of that spirit of education and discovery. Recently, we welcomed students from Waiakea High School Hawaiʻi International Science Experiment (HISE) for guided tours of our biodiesel refinery in Keaʻau on Hawaiʻi Island.

HISE is a student-led educational adventure engaging youth in diversity, science, leadership and collaboration.
Following the tour, Keoni Roosevelt Randolph, HISE student board member and lead planner for the visit to our facility, shared this letter with our team:

“We express our deepest Mahalo for your willingness to host our students during our visit to your Kea’au plant. Both groups had a great time learning the process and components of creating high-quality biodiesel.

Your willingness to share your time, knowledge, and expertise gave our participants a meaningful opportunity to learn and understand what Pacific Biodiesel has to offer, as well as its potential for growth in the future.

What happens after the cooking is done? It matters to us. Used cooking oil may have served its purpose in the kitchen, but it can still have great value when it comes to sustainability.

The United Nations established the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste to raise awareness of food waste and encourage action to reduce it. At Pacific Biodiesel, one important way we put that idea into practice is by recycling used cooking oil from restaurants and foodservice businesses across Hawaiʻi, transforming it into locally made biodiesel. We’ve been doing this since 1995, keeping waste oil out of our landfills and waterways while helping to fuel our communities.

⛽ $7.15 vs. $6.28. Same engine. Different fuel.

While diesel fuel prices continue to soar to record highs around the country, Hawaiʻi's ULSD average hit $7.15/gallon this week (according to AAA). Pacific Biodiesel's average retail price per gallon for biodiesel? $6.28!

That's 87 cents LESS per gallon for locally produced biodiesel this week compared to imported petroleum diesel (fossil diesel)!

Fleet managers: For a 5-truck fleet running 2,500 gallons/month, that's a nearly $2,200 savings per month!

Produced right here in Hawaiʻi, our premium distilled biodiesel (B99.9) can be used in any diesel engine without modification. It’s 100% renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic biofuel that reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 86% compared with petroleum diesel

And choosing locally produced biodiesel does more than reduce emissions. It helps keep energy dollars in Hawaiʻi, supports local jobs and reduces our islands’ dependence on imported fossil fuel, strengthening Hawaiʻi’s energy security and resilience.

This Clean Energy Week, we’re highlighting how renewable energy and agriculture can work together to create a more sustainable future for Hawai‘i.

At Pacific Biodiesel, our Hawai’i Island refinery runs on clean energy. Our farming operations are also designed with the entire carbon cycle in mind, from fueling tractors with locally produced biodiesel to powering our Kaua‘i crushing mill with hydropower to returning plant biomass to the soil.

Each step brings us closer on the path to completely carbon-negative farming, as our founder Bob King explains in this video from Hawai’i Energy Conference. It’s a local, circular system that supports renewable energy, healthier soil and a more resilient Hawai‘i.
